News from CV Alliance

Hi, CV!

Happy 2015!

Did you know 23 states and DC have medical marijuana laws? Have you heard about AB26 giving California’s Alcoholic Beverage Control regulatory authority over our own industry? Washington is about to open its adult recreational marijuana shops, and Colorado retailers have been in business for a year. A new SurveyUSA poll found 90% of Colorado voters who supported Amendment 64 would do it again. In that state, a responsible consumption billboard campaign is going up in response to Maureen Dowd’s terrifying account of eating a pot-infused candy bar: “Don’t let a candy bar ruin your vacation. With edibles, start low and go slow.” And, as of October, they have taken in about $40 million in tax revenues, less than estimated, but that money goes towards prevention and mental health. Banks still won’t take the money because legalization violates federal law. And the attorneys general of Nebraska and Oklahoma have sued Colorado for violating federal supremacy in legalizing marijuana. I will continue to keep you posted and ask that you share information with us, too.

We were thrilled to see Dep. Eric Matejka’s parent session mentioned in the CV Weekly 2014 wrap-up, reporting his December talk on current drug trends. We have terrific programs slated for this semester, most worthy of year-end mention. In January, we host Parent Sessions on safe homes and the cycle of rehab and relapse (for parents only), and the Teen Trials & Tribulations talk on teen anxiety and depression is for parents and children who want to help a friend. In March, Henry Lozano, who worked for three American presidents and is the founder of Red Ribbon Week, will address our strategic partners. That’s big, CV! If there is something you’d like to know about, please let us know because we have access to experts ready, and willing, to share information with members of our community. Or invite us to your event!

Finally, in an unrelated, but persistent aside, I watched a documentary about online dating and learned women fear meeting serial killers and men fear meeting fat women. Feel free to comment on our Facebook page.
