Town Council Hosting Forum
The CV Town Council is hosting a candidate forum tonight, Thursday, Oct. 17 at the La Crescenta Library. Meeting begins at 7 p.m. The regular meeting is preceded by the CV Youth Town Council that will be selecting its officers.
The La Crescenta Library is located at 2809 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta.

Tuna Camp on Historical Society Agenda
Tuna Camp, located on the edge of the Crescenta Valley, was one of the first detention stations to open after the start of WWII. It interrogated and processed hundreds of “enemy aliens” – Japanese, Germans and Italians, guarded by armed soldiers and barbed wire fences. Little was known about this sinister chapter in our local history until recently when the site of Tuna Camp, today the Verdugo Hills Golf Course, was targeted with redevelopment into hundreds of houses.
Sunland-Tujunga historian Lloyd Hitt will show newly found photos of the camp during wartime and talk about the site’s past, its present, and its controversial future as a historic landmark during the next meeting of the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore, La Crescenta.

Gatto to Hold Town Hall Meeting
The public is invited to attend a town hall meeting with Assemblyman Mike Gatto on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. when Assemblyman Gatto will be available to answer questions about community issues, provide updates and information about his 2013 legislation, and discuss suggestions for legislation in 2014.
Town hall meeting with Assemblyman Mike Gatto will take place in The Little White Chapel located at 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank.

Low Cost Mammograms at GAMC
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Glendale Adventist Medical Center is offering a limited number of low-cost digital mammograms. To be eligible, women must be at least 40 years of age, have no breast abnormalities including cancer, implants, or silicone injections, not be pregnant or breastfeeding. Mammograms are limited to the first 100 individuals who call. The cost is $50.

Rosemont Preserve Hosts an Open Gate Afternoon
The community is invited to spend a few refreshing hours at the Rosemont Preserve. There is an “open gate” event on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 27 that provides the chance to wander the trail, enjoy the tranquil setting, the wildlife and the natural beauty. Photographers are urged to bring their camera to capture the autumn afternoon light.
The gate will be open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Friends of the Rosemont Preserve
Committee members will be onsite to answer questions and provide information on this community resource.

The preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave., La Crescenta. Wear sturdy shoes planning to hike.

This event is open to members of the public, suitable for all ages, and completely free.

Free Flu Shots at USC VHH
USC Verdugo Hills Hospital is offering free influenza immunizations to adults 55 years of age and older on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the council room, located on the fourth floor lobby. Influenza immunizations will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Influenza immunizations are also available at this clinic to adults who are under a doctor’s care for long-term health or lung problems; anyone who has been admitted to a hospital within the past year for treatment of kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, anemia or severe asthma; and anyone who has a type of cancer or immunological disorder, which lowers the body’s normal resistance to infections.
