GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Nov. 10, a representative from Habitat for Humanity will make a presentation to the group.

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $20. All are welcome.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

WREATH LAYING CEREMONY

The Daughters of the American Revolution are once again having its annual wreath laying ceremony in Montrose at the Vietnam Memorial at the corner of Honolulu Avenue and Ocean View Boulevard. 

This event honors local veterans and is being held on Friday, Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. rather than Saturday, Nov. 11.

VOLUNTEER WORKDAYS

Volunteers are needed at the Riverwalk on Nov. 11 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to help remove invasive plants from the landscaped areas along the LA River.

On Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., volunteers are needed to water the bigcone spruce and coast live oaks, assist with trail repairs and remove invasive plants from the park.

CRIME, PASSION & HOLLYWOOD IN LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE

At Bolton Hall Museum’s Second Saturday program on Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. participants will find out about the celebrities who live there.

The presenter for this program is Crescenta Valley historian and author Mike Lawler. Lawler, the former president of the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley, will share stories during his talk at Bolton Hall Museum.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

CALTECH ORCHESTRA PRESENTS ENTERTAINMENT

The Caltech Orchestra, directed by Dr. Glenn D. Price, presents its fall concert, titled “American Voices.” There will be two concerts: one on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. and one on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m., both in Ramo Auditorium featuring the same program of music by Peter Boyer, Aaron Copland and Howard Hanson.

         The Caltech Theater (TACIT) presents “Another Revolution” on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Beckman Institute Auditorium. Kat and Henry, two graduate students from opposing scientific disciplines, are forced to share a lab at Columbia University in 1968. Amid interpersonal differences, a campus devolving into political chaos, and the uncertainty and turmoil of the outside world, they each discover what it’s like to be thrown into someone else’s orbit.

Then on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Ramo Auditorium, the Caltech Glee Club & Chamber Singers, directed by Nancy Sulahian, present its fall concerts in Ramo Auditorium. Program includes music by Victoria, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms and folk songs from Korea, Romania, Scotland and the United States. William Schmidt will join as the collaborative pianist.

BOWLING TOURNAMENT IN STUDIO CITY IS A CANCER FUNDRAISER

BINGO BENEFTS KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of the Verdugo is having a bingo on Friday, Nov. 17. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; first game at 6 p.m. Admission is $25, which includes 10 games.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND CURRENT PROGRAMMING AT CV PARK

On Friday, Nov. 17 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the community is invited to a Harvest Festival – Community Dinner (no registration required, completely free, all ages) at CV Park.

Then on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Park is hosting Breakfast with Santa. No registration is required to this free event that is appropriate for all ages.

Ongoing programs at the Park include: Everybody Plays, an afterschool program for ages 7-17 featuring homework help, gardening, indoor games, free play, sports, nature walks and more! (No registration required, completely free); Senior Club – with the help of the department of Mental Health and Public Health, the Park is hosting mental health workshops and group sessions, as well as painting days targeted to seniors, and exercise classes. No registration required and these are free; Tiny Tots – an afternoon program for kids from ages 3 to 5 (who are fully potty trained) is an interactive program with three-four week sessions ($45/week) where parents are encouraged to stay while their children interact with others and practice fundamentals.

GLENDALE/LA CRESCENTA STAMP CLUB

The Glendale/La Crescenta Stamp Club extends an invitation to all stamp enthusiasts and community members to attend their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in the community room of the La Crescenta County Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. at La Crescenta Avenue.

Stamp collectors of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join the Glendale/La Crescenta Stamp Club for an evening filled with the excitement of buying, selling and swapping postage stamps from around the world. This is a perfect opportunity for collectors to expand their collections or find that one elusive stamp they have been searching for.

In addition to the trading opportunities, club members will be available to provide free estimates of the value of inherited and other stamp collections.

PSHA NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2023/24 GIFTS & GRANTS

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has announced the launch of its 2023/24 Gifts & Grants program. Each year Gifts & Grants distributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to local nonprofit organizations to support music and arts programs including underwriting community performances, academy and conservatory scholarships, music therapy and music education.

The application period will close on Nov. 30; awardees will be advised in April 2024. Applications are encouraged from qualifying nonprofit organizations and local schools whose programs are administered and conducted in Los Angeles County, with special consideration given to the greater Pasadena area. Funds for the Gifts & Grants program are derived from the organization’s annual Benefit, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The 2023 Showcase House was held in Pasadena this past spring with nearly 25,000 attendees.  Planning is underway for the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design with details coming later this fall.

VHHS PLANS REUNION

“Team 74” is planning a 50th high school reunion in 2024. Friends and graduates of Verdugo Hills High School are invited to attend to trade stories of family, careers, adventures and anything else.

Currently Team 74 is in the planning phase of collecting names and numbers of classmates and putting together a database; emails from classmates can be received at clsof74reunion@yahoo.com. Information should include a mailing address, cell number and graduate’s name at graduation (if different than now).

A list of frequently asked questions will be provided to keep everyone updated as the reunion plans move forward. Those who belong to various VHHS groups will see redundant information to ensure all classmates are notified and have an opportunity to attend.

At this time the FB VHHS groups will be the reunion information outlet until a more focused site is created.
