The Assistance League of Glendale celebrated its 75th year of giving to the Glendale/La Crescenta community with a big celebration at the clubhouse at 314 E. Harvard in Glendale. Longtime members, including Anna Brewer, Mary Margaret Smith, Margery Welker and Carrie Ward, and dignitaries, including Glendale City Councilmember Paula Devine and CV Town Council President Harry Leon, and representatives from the offices of Congressman Adam Schiff and State Senator Anthony Portantino were on hand to congratulate the hard-working women of the League.
President Marcie Haug gave an overview of the 75 years leading up to the purchase of the building at the present location, the previous Kiefer Mortuary building. The Kiefer aunt, children and grandchildren and workers for Kiefer were on hand to learn of the dedication of the building as a historical site with a new plaque to be mounted at the entrance. Judy Caberra explained the process in earning this honor.
Judy Rogers was in charge of the committee that arranged the celebratory event with food provided by Glendale Community College students.
The Assistance League gives a $1,500 scholarship to a graduate from each of the GUSD high schools plus additional scholarships to Glendale Community College. The League provides Authors & Illustrators to each of the elementary schools on a rotating schedule (Mountain Avenue will be on May 29). Other philanthropies are luncheons for seniors, Operation School Bell that provides students with clothes and school items, and training adults from Tierra del Sol in the League’s Thrift Alley.
Anyone interested in joining the League can contact Rosario Martin at (818) 247-4296.
