Notes & Nods

Lutheran Church in the Foothills

Lutheran Church in the Foothills invites the community to attend its Ash Wednesday service on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. Lent is a 40-day period during which Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus Christ. Lent is a time of reflection and of asking for forgiveness. Ultimately, it is a preparation to celebrate Jesus’s resurrection at the feast of Easter. This year’s Ash Wednesday worship is a joint service between Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in La Crescenta and LCIF in La Cañada. It will take place at the LCIF sanctuary. LCIF will have Lenten worship each Wednesday evening through March 20. With the exception of Ash Wednesday, all Lenten services include a soup supper at 6 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

And a reminder: this Sunday, Feb. 11 during regular 10 a.m. worship with Pastor Rick Hall, LCIF will hold its yearly tradition, the “Souper Bowl of Caring.” Participants are invited to put their money in a soup pot for the team they think will win, and all the money goes to charity. It’s a way to celebrate the big game and supporting a favorite team – all while helping to alleviate hunger and poverty in local communities. The money collected will be forwarded to Lutheran Social Services of Southern California.

Children’s Church is offered during 10 a.m. worship. Families should meet in the church’s sanctuary. After a message for the children from Pastor Hall, the kids head to the Youth Room for games, crafts and study.

Visit lcifoothills.org for event details, including small group gatherings and opportunities to serve. For more information or to request/offer help, email office@lcifoothills.org or call (818) 790-1951. The church is located at 1700 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.
