June 14, 1939 – April 4, 2026
Roger Young passed away on April 4. He graduated from Burroughs High School (1957) and from Occidental College (1961) where he was a member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Edison.
He married fellow Oxy grad Carol Espy and they moved to New York City where Roger started his career in advertising at J. Walter Thompson. While living in New York, they enjoyed many weekends at their cabin in the Berkshires where Roger joined the ski patrol.
In 1970, The Youngs moved back to California where Roger worked at Yamaha as a sporting goods manager. He used his entrepreneurial, creative and inventive nature in the bicycle and satellite businesses.
Roger was also very community-minded. He realized that technology education was needed so he started a Cans for Computers recycling plan at Monte Vista Elementary School, where his wife taught. Each week the students would bring cans and plastic bottles to the recycling truck. This plan earned the money to provide 36 computers for a computer room and one computer, TV and VCR for every classroom.
His community service didn’t stop there. Roger started the La Crescenta Fire Safe Council (LCFSC) and organized an expo at Two Strike Park to educate the residents on how to prepare for fires. This was right before the Station Fire in 2009. The LCFSC continued its fire prevention work in Briggs Terrace.
Roger is survived by his wife Carol, sons Eric and Corey, grandson Chris, brother Bob (wife Judy), a multitude of nieces and nephews, and the many friends and community members whose lives he touched.
