Charles Edward Mayhew

Jan. 4, 1943 – May 7, 2026

Charles Edward Mayhew, lovingly known to family and friends as Ed, passed away peacefully on May 7 at the age of 83 following a brief illness.

Born on Jan. 4, 1943 in San Francisco, California, Ed spent his early years on a farm where he developed the strong work ethic, resilience and integrity that guided him throughout his life. Although his legal name was Charles Edward Mayhew, he was known simply as Ed by virtually everyone who knew him. He attended St. Catherine’s Military Academy in Anaheim where he developed the discipline, leadership and character that became hallmarks of his life.

Ed built a successful career in the insurance industry, beginning with Kemper Insurance, while pursuing studies in mechanical engineering. Through hard work and dedication, he advanced into leadership roles, managing large departments and working with organizations around the world. He earned the respect of colleagues for his professionalism, fairness and commitment to excellence.

In his later years, Ed found the love of his life Sandra. Together they enjoyed retirement, traveling, remodeling their home and creating cherished memories. Their relationship was built on friendship, devotion and enduring love, and they shared 27 wonderful years together.

Ed was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and loyal friend. He was known as a man of honesty and integrity whose word could always be trusted. His kindness, generosity and warm sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Louise Mayhew-Stilwell; his granddaughter Alyssa; and his great-grandson Leon Lopez-Mayhew, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will continue to cherish his memory.

A celebration of life was held at Forest Lawn on May 22 where family and friends gathered to honor Ed and celebrate a life filled with love, accomplishment and meaningful relationships.

Ed’s legacy of hard work, loyalty, compassion and dedication to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Always true to his word, loyal in friendship and devoted to those he loved.
