Glendale Police Officer Akopian was the “cop who shopped” with Jake, a local elementary school boy, at Target recently. Jake was the recipient of a Target gift card as part of the generosity of the GPD, Glendale Association of Realtors and the STAR [Students Training as Role Models] program.
Through the STAR program GPD has been able to help at-risk and in-need children throughout the city. Jake had been struggling with virtual schooling but, with the help of Glendale Unified School District staff, he was able to join an in-person pod and has worked hard to bring his grades up.
His hard work was rewarded by giving him the chance to go shopping at Target where he purchased items not only for himself but also for his siblings and mother.
“Thank you to the Glendale Association of Realtors for your kind and generous donation to these amazing kids,” Akopian said. “I’d like to thank the GAOR members, affiliates, and staff – their 2020 president Steven Small and leadership team – for helping these kids now and for many years to come.”
What made this donation particularly special was where part of the funding came from. Dominique is another elementary student who does not know Jake but wanted to help others. When he was given a Target card from GPD to shop for himself he instead gave it back to the organizers telling them he would like the gift card to help another student. This act of selflessness made the shopping experience even more meaningful knowing it had been paid forward by another student.
Prior to shopping, Akopian explained to Jake that a fellow student had donated his card to him. He then asked Jake if he understood what “pay it forward” meant.
“It means helping others,” Jake said.
“I want you to remember this and always try to pay it forward,” Akopian responded.
Jake agreed and, as he went to find toys and other items, he made certain to choose things for the rest of his family.
