Montrose Italian restaurant Giuseppe’s Pizzeria was honored on Tuesday with a commendation from the Glendale City Council. The commendation was in recognition of the restaurant’s having been awarded the Taster’s Choice Award for its meatballs during this year’s 2014 Rose Float fundraiser meatball tasting competition.

The city’s 2014 float entry prominently features Meatball the bear. The  float will be near the head of the 2014 Rose Parade, with only two other floats preceding it.

“You couldn’t get better coverage for a float in the parade,” said Mayor Dave Weaver.

On hand to accept the city’s commendation was Ole Olson, general manager for Giuseppe’s, and Chris Santillo, a waiter at the restaurant.

“We are very proud to have won the Taster’s Choice Award for our meatballs,” said Olson. “Our food and our recipes are some of the things that we take great pride in.” The restaurant’s recipe for the award-winning meatballs, he explained, goes back three generations.

Olson also expressed pride for his restaurant’s participation in the fundraising to find a home for the notorious Meatball.

Mayor Weaver talked about a visit he made to Giuseppe’s over the weekend, singling out the meatballs for special praise.

“I tasted the meatballs just to make sure,” joked the mayor. “They were delicious. Excellent.”
