Dec. 2

4700 block of Alta Canyada Drive in La Cañada, a resident reported that he received a phone call from a man who identified himself as an attorney that was representing the resident’s granddaughter. The attorney stated the granddaughter was in jail on a reckless driving charge. The attorney passed the phone over to woman who, allegedly, was the resident’s granddaughter. The woman explained she was in jail and needed bail money. The man stating he was the attorney told the resident to go to his bank and withdraw the bail money and a courier service would come to the resident’s home to pick up the funds. Although the resident was suspicious of the courier service, he was focused on helping his granddaughter.

He handed the money to the courier service representative who he described as a white female who was in her 20s, 5’8” tall with blond hair. He did not see what type of vehicle she was driving. Later that day the resident contacted his granddaughter and found her to be safe and realized the earlier call was a scam. The alleged attorney called the resident the next morning and said he needed additional funding and that the resident was on a 48-hour “gag order.” The resident said he was aware of the scam and hung up the phone. The initial call occurred at 10 a.m.
