SCE asks that residents conserve power during the Labor Day weekend heat wave, particularly from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Extremely hot weather is expected during the Labor Day weekend, and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) has issued a Flex Alert starting on Saturday through Monday to help reduce the strain on the electric grid.
Please conserve power by turning air conditioner to at least 78°F, and turning off unnecessary appliances. Energy conservation tips and a list of what SCE is doing are listed below.
There are several ways preparations can be made for a Flex Alert each day of the weekend:
- “Pre-cool” homes or lower air conditioning thermostats before 3 p.m.
- Charge electric vehicles before 3 p.m. or after 9 p.m.
- Make sure to charge mobile devices and laptops before 3 p.m.
- Run dishwashers, washing machines, and other major appliances before
3 p.m. or after 9 p.m. - Set pool pumps to run in the early morning or late at night.
SCE customers can also access the Summer Discount Plan program that provides incentives for those who are able to reduce their energy use when the need arises. Customers can sign up to receive notifications on their smartphones about upcoming energy events so that they can be prepared and plan around them. Learn more about the DR Alerts app.
Glendale Water & Power (GWP) is asking its customers to conserve as much electricity as possible starting today, Friday, Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 7 in order to reduce the demand on the electrical system and to avoid rotating outages. At this time, rotating outages have not been declared.
Rotating outages are controlled power outages that we enact as a last resort when there is a statewide power emergency. Depending on the severity, we will shut off power for limited amounts of time to help ease the demand on the electrical grid. Rotating outages help prevent larger and longer power outages.
To help conserve energy and avoid any forced outages turn off unnecessary lights, unplug unused chargers and unused appliances with digital timers, turn up the thermostat whenever possible, use fans and don’t run large appliances and pool equipment until after 9 p.m.
