Star Dancing with Stars at
Deukmejian
The City of Glendale Community Service and Parks Dept. presents “Dancing With the Stars” – the Summer 2012 Edition on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Learn all about the Perseid meteor shower and other heavenly bodies at Deukmejian Wilderness Park. The Burbank Sidewalk Astronomers are returning to share their knowledge and telescopes. The event is free but space is limited. Call (818) 548-3795 to reserve a spot.


SPOTS STILL OPEN FOR Glendale City Golf Championship
Spots for the inaugural Glendale City Golf Championship are filling up fast, so interested golfers are urged to sign up right away.

The first round will be on Aug. 22 and held at the Scholl Canyon Golf Club. The second round will be held at Oakmont Country Club on Aug. 27.

The cost for the event is $75 and is open to all amateur golfers.

All participants will be eligible to win the championship flight and players with a GHIN index can also compete for the net flights.

Watermelon Festival this Weekend
The 51st Annual Sunland-Tujunga Watermelon Festival takes place Aug. 10-12 at Sunland Park. Delicious free watermelon will be available to cool down on hot summer days. The festival also features watermelon carving display, watermelon eating contest, seed spitting contest, and watermelon festival queen coronation. There will also be an international food court, dining tent, bazaar marketplace, beer garden, carnival rides, arcade games, live entertainment and more. Admission is $5; children under 30” are free.

Cooling Centers Extend Hours
The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will be extending cooling center hours in response to hot temperatures. Continuing until Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., the public can find relief from the heat at locations in Sylmar, Sherman Oaks and Canoga Park and the Senior Citizen Centers and Recreation and Parks facilities at 8640 Fenwick St. in Sunland.
