New Scam Hits Locals

Local residents should be aware of a new scam hitting the area. A person will call a resident claiming to be from the justice system and accuse the resident of not appearing for jury duty. The caller will claim that a fine is due and bail can be arranged then suggests meeting in the parking lot of the CV Sheriff’s Station to collect payment.

The Sheriff’s Station has been notified of the scam.

 

CVCA Holds Monthly Meeting

The Crescenta Valley Community Association will have its monthly meeting tonight, Thursday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. The CVCA is a cross-jurisdictional, volunteer organization that encourages collaboration between community groups so that the Crescenta Valley can be represented with one voice. The meeting is held at the La Crescenta Library at 2809 Foothill Blvd. in the community room (entrance off La Crescenta Avenue). Silent Movies at Two Strike

The Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley and the LA County Parks Dept. is hosting Silent Movie Night at Two Strike Park on July 27 at 8 p.m. Projectionist Joe Rinaudo will select some of his favorite silent shorts and, with his 100-year-old, hand-cranked projector, screen them for residents who may wish to come by and live some history.

The event is free and family-friendly.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, among the films screened will be “Trip to the Moon” a 1902 French black-and-white silent science fiction film.

Pianist Cliff Retallick will accompany the films.

‘Survival Guide’ at Deukmejian Park

Tips on hiking in the summer heat or winter cold, the things people should always have in their backpack and ways to keep a dog safe on the trail plus basic first aid techniques are just some of the things that will be presented by the City of Glendale Community Services & Parks Dept. Trails and Open Space Program “Survival Guide” at Deukmejian Park on Saturday night, July 27.

The evening begins with songs, stories and skits and finishes with a survival presentation followed by smiles and s’mores.

Come at 6:30 p.m. for the crafts or arrive at 7 p.m. for the start of the campfire program.

Rosemont Preserve Tour – ‘Living with Wildlife’

All are invited on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for a discussion on how to co-exist peacefully with local wildlife. Wildlife photographer and expert tracker Johanna Turner will explains why wildlife comes into local yards and what to do when coming face-to-face with a bear or coyote. She will talk about how to secure trash and avoid confrontations. Bring all questions about our mama bear and her cubs!

The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. Park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. in La Crescenta. Bring water and a hat and wear sturdy shoes to walk the trail. 

This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages, no reservations required. Rain cancels event. Sorry, no pets please.

Fire Safe Council Hosting Meeting

On Monday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m., the CV Fire Safe Council will hold a community meeting at Rosemont Middle School to hear from first responders the results of their study on proposed alert sirens for the Briggs Terrace area plus general how-tos of evacuating when a blaze ignites and threatens the area. All are welcome to attend.

County Suspends Burn Permits

In an ongoing effort to prevent wildfires, all burn permits in Los Angeles County will be suspended. As of July 2, the Los Angeles County Fire Dept. stopped issuing burn permits due to increased fire activity throughout Southern California. This burn suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
