The Library, Arts & Culture Dept. (”Library”) of the City of Glendale (“City”) – on behalf of the City’s Arts & Culture Commission (“ACC”) – is accepting proposals from qualified candidates who are interested in submitting design concepts for the Creative Crosswalks Program – Request for Proposals. Artists and community members are invited to apply. The application portal closes on Friday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. PST.

The goal of the Creative Crosswalks Program is to enhance traffic safety in creative ways. In June 2023, the City of Glendale launched the pilot Creative Crosswalks program as an example of utilizing art as a means for traffic calming, pedestrian safety and neighborhood improvement. The Creative Crosswalks program is in partnership with the Public Works Dept. with the goal of incorporating civic art into daily life.

The theme for this Creative Crosswalks Program – Request for Proposals is Glendale Sister Cities. The mission of the Glendale Sister Cities Program is to foster international understanding, promote cultural exchange, encourage educational collaboration and build economic development partnership between Glendale and its designated sister cities. The City of Glendale currently has 11 sister cities and four friendship cities. The ACC invites artists and artist teams to submit designs that celebrate the Glendale Sister Cities through proposals that honor the traditions, culture, landscape, cuisine and artistry of each city. All artistic genres are encouraged. Local and international artists and artist teams are encouraged to apply for this opportunity.

This Request for Proposals includes three Public Works projects that include Creative Crosswalk opportunities. The ACC will fund individual project budget ranges from $1,000 – $20,000 ($1,000 per crosswalk leg design) based on the size and scope of the project. The project budget is for producing a design concept rendering only.
The City highly encourages artists and artist teams of all cultural backgrounds and experiences to apply for this opportunity with the goal of celebrating the diversity and demographics of the Glendale community. Local and international artists and artist teams are encouraged to apply. A pre-recorded Creative Crosswalks – Application Overview video will be published on the Arts & Culture Commission’s website on Friday, July 31 at 5 p.m. PST to provide an overview on the application process.
