GUSD Has a Tied Election As of Wednesday

By Mary O’KEEFE

The ballots in California continue to be counted. The next release of numbers was on Wednesday, after press time, and the final release will be on Friday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Most elections are pretty much decided and there is not a lot of movement on the totals; however, in the Glendale Unified School District battle for board of education Trustee Area B between Greg Krikorian and Ingrid Gunnell, the numbers have continued to be close.

Krikorian served on the GUSD board for 22 years but in 2022 he decided not to run for reelection. This year he decided to throw his hat back into the ring and once again run for a seat on the board.

Gunnell is the incumbent and has been on the board of education since 2022. She presently serves as president of the board.

The race for Trustee Area B has been incredibly close since the results first began coming in but as of Wednesday at 1:08 p.m. both had received 4,557 votes – making the results a tie.

It is expected that tie will be broken with updates expected on both Wednesday and Friday, but what would happen if they remain tied?

According to California Election Code Section 15651(a), if two or more candidates receive an equal and highest number of votes, the tie must be resolved either by lot (such as a coin toss or drawing straws or a card draw) or via a special runoff election.

County officials must report final official results to the Secretary of State by July 3. The Secretary of State will certify the results on July 10, 2026.
