BRKICH, a subcontractor for Crescenta Valley Water District, was working earlier this afternoon on La Crescenta Avenue infrastructure improvements when, while  digging a trench to install a pipe, hit a gas main. Immediately the avenue was shut down 500 feet both north and south of Orange Avenue and the fire department and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. were immediately notified.

According to the CV Sheriff’s Dept., a mandatory evacuation alert was initially sent out to affected residents with instructions to go to Two Strike Park. That alert has since been adjusted to voluntary evacuation.

Gas is still escaping and safety personnel are still on scene. The pipe that is leaking the gas needs to be clamped off; that work is estimated to be completed by 4:45 p.m. After that roads will need to be repaired.

La Crescenta Avenue is currently closed from El Caminito to Henrietta.
