Donations Sought
On Saturday, Mike Leum, a member of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. Montrose Search and Rescue team, and his son Hunter will swim from San Francisco to Alcatraz then will head to Oregon to climb Mt. Hood in the name of cancer survivors and victims. Once they summit the mountain they will fly flags for those who have battled cancer, no matter the outcome.
The event is called “The Climb to Fight” “Sea to Summit.” There is still time to donate to help the Leums raise funds for cancer research. To donate visit https://tinyurl.com/ycwtm89.

 

Rosemont Preserve Restoration Day
The community is invited to the Rosemont Preserve Restoration Day on Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. to help protect the natural habitat at Rosemont Preserve. Volunteers will be tending to native plants, removing invasive plants, doing some light trail maintenance and preparing for the summer. Join the biodiversity project on iNaturalist and learn how to become a Citizen Scientist.
Wear sturdy shoes, comfortable clothes and garden gloves (long pants and sleeves are recommended). Tools will be available.
The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave.
This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages and no reservations required. Rain cancels event. Sorry, no pets please.

Veterans Host Monthly Breakfast
Local veterans host a monthly breakfast at the Verdugo Hills Memorial Hall on the second
Saturday of the month. The breakfast is free to all local veterans and supporters, but donations are always graciously accepted. This month’s breakfast is on Saturday, June 9 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The Hall is located at 4011 La Crescenta Ave.

 

Commemoration of Montrose Vietnam War Memorial Anniversary
A ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Montrose Vietnam War Memorial at Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue is planned for Saturday, June 16. The ceremony is planned for 3 p.m. and will include a reading of the names of the soldiers killed in action that are on the plaque and distribution of a historical book about the soldiers.
All are invited to attend.

 

Sentencing Planned in Case of Local Murder
The sentencing of David Bushman, 44, of Gardena that was originally scheduled for May 24 has been continued to June 26 at the Superior Court in Pasadena.
On May 2, a jury found Bushman found guilty of murder in the first degree after a trial lasting about two weeks. His victim was

Arthur Palmer, 73, whose body was found on July 24, 2015 at his home in the 3000 block of Frances Avenue.

 

CVWD Holding Hearing
On Tuesday, June 12 at 6 p.m., Crescenta Valley Water District will hold a public hearing on a proposed water rate increase. The hearing will be held at the District’s administration office located at 2700 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta.
At the hearing, staff will present information regarding a rate increase that is based on operation and maintenance costs as well as using water rates to fund capital improvement projects to improve the water system.
Any CVWD customer or property owner may file a written protest of the proposed rate changes by sending a letter to CVWD, 2700 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta, CA 91214. A valid protest letter must be received at the main office by Tuesday, June 12 at 4 p.m. Protest letters must include your name, your CVWD service address, a statement of protest and an original signature.
Protest letters will be tabulated and presented to the board of directors at the public hearing. Any CVWD customer or property owner may appear at the public hearing.

 

Golf Tournament Coming Up

Book Exchange at Adams Square Mini Park
The Adams Square Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a book exchange in the Adams Square Mini Park on Saturday, June 16 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to walk to the park or carpool as street parking is limited.
Adults and children are invited to bring books to exchange with neighbors and friends. The Glendale Public Library will also be donating used books to be given away, including books from several of its branches, including the Brand Library. The Library will also be hosting a family activity table.
Local authors, including Anita L. Britt, DeAnn Jennings, Shervin Yousefian and Jennifer Berry, will be showing and speaking about their works that include children’s books, photography and ghost stories. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view an art exhibition by Glendale High School students mounted in the historic gas station within the park.
District Burger Food Truck will be on site from which to purchase refreshments.
There will be free drawings for many prizes including tickets to any Alex Theatre event or Alex Film Society screening.
