Weather in the Foothills

“I’m singin’ in the rain

Just singin’ in the rain

What a glorious feeling

I’m happy again …

Let the stormy clouds chase

Everyone from the place

Come on with the rain …

Da da da da da da

I’m happy again

I’m singin’ and dancin’ in the rain

I’m dancin’ and singin’ in the rain”

~ Arthur Freed, “Singing in the Rain” 1929

So I was told last Saturday night, “It has never rained at our CVHS after-prom event – Prom Plus.” I believe it! Even the NWS meteorologists up in Oxnard claim the weather has been extremely “un-May like.” Typically, the winter storms are wrung out and, besides a bit of drizzle from seasonal fog, we’re mostly dry until at least October. Before trying to find an answer to nature’s nonsense, I must share my fortunate stroke of serendipity.

The prom had ended hours before. Without a care in the world, a prom couple were “singin’ and dancing in the rain” in the Crescenta Cañada Y courtyard. The talent shown during their impromptu moment was evident. Not an umbrella, nor lamppost, were in sight. Gene Kelly was no doubt smilin’ down upon them.

If you aren’t familiar with Prom Plus, it is an extremely fun, after-prom event. Held at the Y, it offers everything under the sun, from amazing food to a casino. Partying without the alcohol is the goal; don’t tell the guests!

It may be a little longer before springtime weather returns to California as a cool and showery unsettled weather pattern has settled over the region. This on-and-off precipitation is expected to continue into next week. Blizzards are blowing over the Sierra once again, building up the snowpack. The NWS is calling the present weather, “A winter Wonderland in May.”

So indeed the stormy clouds are giving us chase!
