Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Woodbury University and delivered a keynote address at the university’s  2025 commencement ceremony on May 10. The honor recognized Supervisor Barger’s decades-long career in public service and her steadfast advocacy for mental health services, public safety, veterans and foster youth.

Supervisor Barger addressed hundreds of graduates, faculty and families during the ceremony held on Woodbury’s main campus in Burbank.

“This recognition means more than I can express,” said Supervisor Barger. “Public service and leadership is about showing up, one step at a time, and doing the hard work when it matters most. I’ve learned that progress comes from persistence, not from perfection. I see resilience in this graduating class and it’s why I believe our future is in good hands.”

In her remarks, Supervisor Barger reflected on her 35-year career in Los Angeles County government and encouraged graduates to lead with passion, perseverance and a commitment to the greater good. She also recounted personal experiences that shaped her path, including a pivotal conversation with her father that grounded her purpose in public life.

Woodbury University interim president and senior academic officer Jeff Bellantoni praised Barger’s leadership.

“Supervisor Barger’s commitment to public service and steadfast leadership throughout Los Angeles County exemplify the values we instill in our students at Woodbury: engagement, responsibility and impact,” Bellantoni said. “We are proud to recognize her and welcome her to our community.”

In addition to honoring Supervisor Barger, the Woodbury University recognized three outstanding alumni for their professional excellence and impact:

Mariya Palanijan, a visionary entrepreneur redefining the future of business through bold, cross-industry ventures; Ignacio Rodriguez, an innovative architect bringing fresh perspective and intention to contemporary luxury design; Donny White, a trailblazing creative transforming fashion to empower veterans and champion size-inclusive design.

Collectively, the honorees represent the diversity, creativity and leadership at the heart of the Woodbury University mission.
