One thousand American flags will again be placed on the grounds of Forest Lawn in Glendale by the Glendale Sunrise Rotary to commemorate Memorial Day. The ceremony on May 26 at 11 a.m. will honor first responders – specifically members of the Glendale Police Dept., Glendale Fire Dept., LA County Fire Dept. and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept.
“We’re giving them the Service Above Self award in recognition of their unwavering dedication and commitment to our community during the LA Fires,” said Melina Sardar, Glendale Sunrise Rotary president and event co-chair. “We will have representation from Glendale Police Dept. and fire department, as well as LA County Fire and LA Sheriff.”
The Service Above Self award is one of the highest awards given by the Rotarians to those who “make an impact on humanity.”
The flags will be installed on the property, located at 1712 S. Glendale Ave. in Glendale, on Tuesday, May 20. They’ll be removed on May 27.
Sardar said that a Rotary representative will be on-site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, May 22 through Sunday, May 25 so supporters can either sponsor the event or purchase flag/s. Sponsorships range from $250 to $10,000; individual flags are $50.
The event is free to attend. Sardar said that between 30 and 60 people are expected to attend.
“I invite you to join our efforts please – sponsor a flag, attend our May 26 program at 11 a.m. at Glendale Forest Lawn,” said Sardar. “Most importantly, recognize someone meaningful in your life by dedicating a flag in their honor. Proceeds from this event support the many community programs our Rotary Club is passionate about, including those serving veterans.”
