So Much to be Grateful For

As you know, on Sunday was Taste of Montrose, one of the largest fundraisers for Prom Plus (the after-prom event for CVHS seniors and their guests). ToM was part of a busy day on Honolulu Avenue as it was also the Kids N Kritters and Wags N Whiskers events along with the weekly Harvest Market. Though the weather was a little sketchy (we did see some rain in the early afternoon), overall the events were a screaming success. Prom Plus/ToM raised over $2,000 for the May 20 event – about 10% of our budget.

There are few words to express how grateful I am. Recently, Prom Plus (of which I am president) was able to raise a substantial amount of money through the open house barbecue held on campus, our first-ever bingo game at the American Legion Hall and the annual Taste of Montrose. Financial support also came in through a gift from the prayer breakfast totaling $1,000. As I write this, people are getting in touch with our volunteer coordinator to sign up to be part of the midnight to 5 a.m. event – yes, midnight to 5 a.m. And as important as the money is, we need people who love our students as much as we do to step up and – for one night during the year – help prepare food, dump trash, oversee an activity or deal cards. If an all-nighter isn’t your style, decorating begins in mid-afternoon under the direction of Mary O’Keefe (mary@cvweekly/com).

This year for ToM, Charly Shelton prepared a video of the event that is on our website www.promplus.org. I hope you take a minute to watch it. Also, Mary O’Keefe spent time with most of the participating restaurants; you can read a little about each on page 27 of this week’s paper. Also in the paper you can read the story of all of the events along Honolulu Avenue. We tried to capture the excitement so those who weren’t there can experience it vicariously.

I hope that you remember those who support Prom Plus and stop into their restaurants; not all participated in our fundraiser so we want to honor those who did. Learn about the fantastic and altruistic eateries we have here locally. Let them know they are appreciated.

I also promised you a review of my dining delight at Bourbon Steak where National Burger Month was recognized. Paired with Modern Times beer, the tasting was a night to remember. In fact, writing the article did make my mouth water a little. Get in there before the end of the month, though, as these creations will not reappear until next May.
