Days Filled with Surprise

On Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending the Kiwanis Club of Glendale’s bingo night. Held at the Elks Club in Glendale (where the club also meets every Friday afternoon), the room was packed with supporters of the Kiwanis as well as die-hard bingo players – some who brought their own dauber. Yikes!

But the event, overseen by Miryam Finkelberg, was a night of fun for everyone – even for the most serious players. With a meager entry fee of just $15 for four cards per game the room quickly filled with most players like me – mentally counting their $100 winnings.

Alas – it was not to be for me. But I am encouraged by the thought that I will have the chance again to rake in the “big bucks” at the upcoming Prom Plus Bingo Night on Feb. 9. Held at the American Legion Hall in La Crescenta, the doors will open at 5 p.m. with the first game planned for 6 p.m. In addition to the 40 chances to win for just $15, there will be extra “big chip” games that cost just $1 per card. Those games also pay $100. And for those who are interested in sponsoring a game, the cost is just $100 – a bargain when sponsors consider that not only will their name appear in the night’s program but they will have the chance to “call” a game (reading a game’s numbers as they pop onto the computer screen) and say a few words about their business or service. Such a deal! If you’re interested in being part of the Prom Plus Bingo Night, shoot me an email at robin@cvweekly.com or call me at (818) 248-2740.

While Saturday was a night of fun, Sunday was more somber. I attended the service for my friend and Prom Plus volunteer coordinator Bob Fletcher. Though I knew how special Bob was, it was awesome to see that so many shared that opinion. The studios at the Brand Library & Art Center were overflowing with people who wanted to share in the celebration of Bob’s life. His family – wife Rebecca and sons James and Adam – were obviously touched by the number of people who came to the event. Photos were shared as was a video that gave a glimpse into the well-lived life of my friend. I applaud those who took the microphone to share their experiences with Bob – not only because public speaking can be daunting but also because their stories provided a depth to this amazing volunteer with the contagious laugh.

We always kid here at the CV Weekly that if something is going to happen, it will be on a Wednesday (our production day). This week was no exception. First was the decision handed down by the Dept. of Regional Planning regarding the appeal of an installation by AT&T of a 5G small cell antenna on a utility pole in a local neighborhood (see In Briefs on page 3 for a brief summary of their decision; more next week). Next was the news that Winfred Roberson Jr., superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District, was released from his contract by the board of education. Holy cow! I sure didn’t see that coming.

We were able to share the initial information but not much was released. You’ll find out everything we know by reading this week’s story on the cover.
