Vivian Ekchian, superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District, released the following statement:

Glendale Unified School District remains steadfast in our commitment to provide on-campus childcare and in-person services for our highest need students and families while following all guidance from state and county departments of public health. This week, Governor Newsom and the CA Department of Public Health ended the Regional Stay at Home Order. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed that, following a strongly recommended brief pause, it is safe for school districts to resume in-person services on Feb. 1.

We look forward to resuming on-campus activities, including childcare in our Technology Learning Pods, Facilitated Learning Centers, kindergarten instruction at Mann Elementary, athletic conditioning, and on-site assessments, this Monday, Feb. 1. We remain confident that the systems we have put in place on our campuses are effective at keeping students and employees safe and healthy.

Glendale Unified will continue operating in a distance learning environment until at least March 12, and for as long as Los Angeles County remains in the Widespread (Purple) Tier for COVID-19 transmission. We are continuing to prepare our school sites following all health and safety protocols so we are ready for the careful and deliberate return of students for on-campus instruction once it is safe to do so. I am proud to say that the health and safety measures we have implemented across our district have proven effective, as we have a less than 1.6% rate of documented on-site transmission in our schools and district facilities.

We look forward to resuming in-person activities on Monday and hope to return additional students to campus soon.
