In Brief

New Year, New Adventure

Start off the New Year with a new adventure. Join volunteers as they drive up the Hostetter Fire Road to reach the Experimental Forest on Saturday, Jan. 12. There they will spend three hours in the Forest (including travel time) working on planting new trees, watering and weeding around established trees.

Meet at Hostetter Fire Road in the Crescenta Valley (where the 210 Freeway crosses La Tuna Canyon Road) at 9 a.m. The fire gate will be closed at 9:15 a.m., so please be prompt. Gates will reopen at noon at the conclusion of the workday. The trip will be up the undeveloped fire road into the mountains. This road requires high clearance vehicles and there are no bathroom facilities available during the event. Please call to RSVP: (818) 548-3795.

Beautification Project at
Two Strike Park

The LA Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisor Kathryn Barger to allocate $75,000 for a tree planting and beautification project at Two Strike Park in La Crescenta.

On June 26, eight trees were removed from Two Strike Park’s entry median because they were dead or presented safety concerns. Plans to replace the trees and beautify the park began shortly after. The Crescenta Valley Town Council formed an ad hoc committee that met with staff at the park to discuss and design the project.

The support from Supervisor Barger’s office will help secure needed resources to replace the trees, plant drought-tolerant landscaping, and install irrigation, among other related improvements. The Dept. of Parks and Recreation is expected to complete the project within four months.

I-210 Pavement Rehabilitation Project Nears Completion

The I-210 pavement rehabilitation project in the cities of Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge and Glendale/La Crescenta is drawing to a close. Earlier this month crews poured the last amount of concrete on I-210 and began to apply final striping onto the highway.

Although crews have completed the work on the pavement of the travel lanes, the contractor still has a few items to complete before the project is finalized, including: striping, landscaping, removing K-rails, testing the new tunnel lighting system, installing guardrail on several ramps and connectors, installing traffic loops and installing overhead signs on existing structures (full closures may occur for this item) in addition to other small miscellaneous contract items.

All of the remaining work is subject to weather conditions. To apply final striping on the road, the temperature of the highway needs to be 50 degrees or above.
