Glendale Community College Donors Give $350,000 in Scholarships

Dozens of GCC students received thousands of dollars in scholarships on a late afternoon on Friday, June 2. Since some scholarships were delivered earlier, a total of $350,000 was presented to 524 students. Over 100 donors, students, parents, GCC teachers and administrators were seated in the outdoor Plaza Vaquero on the college campus to either take part in or watch the ceremony.

Welcoming her audience was Natalie Dawoodi, oresident of the Associated Students of GCC, one of the sponsoring organizations of the banquet. Introductions were offered by campus leaders including Superintendent/President Dr. Ryan Cornner, Foundation Executive Lisa Brooks and Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Tzoler Oukayan.

Dawoodi introduced the scholarship sponsors and their recipients. New scholarships were given first. Among those was the David Viar Career Education & Service Scholarship. It was presented by immediate past GCC Superintendent/President Dr. David Viar to student Patricia Gill.

Another first-time scholarship was given by Desiree Portillo Rabinov and Kathy Lefkovits, representing Soroptimist International of Glendale. Recipients were Scarlet Lastrapes, Subhitsha Sridhar, Grace Temblador and Camille Morgan. The LGBTQ+ College Transfer Scholarship was presented by Carl Matthes to Lemont McDowell and Dylan Seward.

Additional sponsors were the GCC Scholarship Program and the GCC Foundation. Coordinators were Dr. Tzoler Oukayan and Student Affairs Manager Aida Avanousian.
