Glendale Youth Orchestra Presents ‘Russian Romantics’

On Sunday, March 8 the Glendale Youth Orchestra, conducted by Henry Shin, will perform the second concert of the 31st season at 7 p.m. at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. The program, titled “Russian Romantics,” will feature the powerful music of Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.”

This concert will mark the second concert for Shin as part of his debut season as GYO’s music director and conductor. Known for his “keen sense of timing, charisma, and leadership,” Shin is building a reputation as one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. Since 2015, Shin also serves as director of orchestras at Pasadena City College. A strong proponent of bringing music to underserved youth in Los Angeles, he is the music director and conductor of the nationally-acclaimed Harmony Project Orchestras, Hollywood, the Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in Porter Ranch and with the Kadima Conservatory Philharmonic in Pacoima.

The GYO is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County board of supervisors through the Los Angeles County Dept. of Arts and Culture. Its mission is to contribute to a world where exceptional young musicians are empowered to express themselves through music: to explore, appreciate, develop talent and a passion for music; to acquire skills, discipline, and enhanced creativity along the journey of musical education; to transform through music, as well as through life, into better citizens of our communities and the world at large.

Formed in 1989 by a group of Glendale music lovers and school teachers, the Glendale Youth Orchestra now attracts talented young musicians in grades six through 12 and college music programs from across Los Angeles County. Auditions for membership in the orchestra are ongoing and may be arranged by calling emailing the GYO at More information can be found at
