Sondheim Tribute at LCPC

An unmissable musical extravaganza, La Cañada Presbyterian Church presents “Sondheim on Living and Loving” on Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. Featuring musical favorites from “Follies,” “Company,” “Into the Woods,” “A Little Night Music,”
“Forum” and many more, “Sondheim on Living and Loving” showcases some of the greatest Sondheim hits ever to grace the stage. The concert will be presented by the LCPC Chancel Choir and soloists, using the full original Broadway vocal arrangements and orchestrations. Admission is free for this tribute show. Those who come at 1:30 p.m. will hear LCPC music director Jack Lantz discuss how Stephen Sondheim creates his lyrical and musical tapestry and how this tribute show was assembled.

Featuring over 20 Sondheim hits, the concert opens with Mark Beasom and Gabriel Manro giving the “Invocation and Instructions to the Audience” from Sondheim’s early show “The Frogs.” The chorus then advises that, indeed, we have a “Comedy Tonight” from “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

Christina Whitten Thomas will be singing at motor-mouth speed the rap “(Not) Getting Married Today.” Hannah Little sings of current and past regrets in “Send in the Clowns.” Kyla McCarrel and chorus advise “Children Will Listen” and the chorus binds together in unity on “Old Friends,” “Sunday,” ”Everybody Ought to Have a Maid” and “Side by Side by Side,” plus many more.

The over 20 songs explore the themes of “Living and Loving” in today’s complex and dynamic world via Sondheim’s inventive, and sometimes complex, lyrics and music. Tying it all together are the elements of wonder and fun.

The concert is free to attend. La Cañada Presbyterian Church is located at 626 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada. For those who cannot attend in-person, the concert and pre-concert lecture will be live-streamed. Use the following link to watch:   live.lacanadapc.org.
