KIWANIS CLUB PRESENTS INFLUENCE POWER

Chaplin Bill Mezdorf presents a 9/11 story at the Friday, Nov. 22 meeting of the Glendale Kiwanis.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

 

 

MOVIE NIGHT AT UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF THE VERDUGO HILLS

VOICE OF NATURE AT ACE/121

ace/121 Gallery presents Voice of Nature, the annual exhibition featuring work by artists who live in the ACE/121 artist community. In Voice of Nature, the ACE/121 community proposes a themed group show with a vast scope, presenting artworks of diverse medium ranging from painting to poetry, music to collage and ceramics.

Responding to the prompt “What does nature have to say? What is your voice of nature?” residents of ACE/121 have created an exhibition that represents a chorus of voices under a single roof. The artists find nature in their every day: not only in the natural world, but also in the nature of humanity, the figure, small moments as well as those large forces which bind all together.

Opening reception is Nov. 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

PSA OFFERS TWO SHOWS

The Pasadena Society of Artists announces two upcoming shows. On Nov. 23, PSA and other talented artists are participating in “The Art of Giving Art.” This exhibit of gift-oriented art continues through Saturday, Jan. 4 at 869 E. Mariposa St. in Altadena. Meet and visit with the participating artists and enjoy jazz by the Larry Muradian Trio at the opening reception on Nov. 23 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

An open house on Dec. 7 features 50 local artists with artworks on view from realistic to abstract, paintings to crocheted figures. All artwork is available for purchase, priced at $250 or less. A mid-show holiday reception and open house will take place Saturday, Dec. 7 from noon to 5 p.m.

 

 

‘THANKSGIVING: CELEBRATION OF BOUNTY, BEAUTY AND GOOD LIFE’ AT CALTECH

The Caltech Glee Club and Chamber singers present “Thanksgiving: Celebration of Bounty, Beauty and Good Life.” Nancy Sulahian, accompanied by William Schmidt, will conduct music from the English Renaissance, Italian Baroque, and an array of American folk songs and a hint of winter holidays.

This event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. in Ramo Auditorium on the Caltech campus. Admission and parking is free and no tickets are required.

BORMAN AND KOLO TO CO-FEATURE

The Village Poets of Sunland-Tujunga invites the community to its next Monthly Reading Series on Sunday, Nov. 24 from 4:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum. Presenting will be singer, songwriter, poet, actress and community activist Cile Borman. She will co-feature with artist-painter, poet and writer Andy Kolo (Andrzej Kolodziej), the founder of Polish Krak Poetry Group and of the Krak Art Group of California-based artists.

OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE CHOIR FALL CONCERT     

On Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m., a free concert will be performed by the Occidental College Choir.   

There will be an eclectic music mix including selections by Simon & Garfunkel , Rollo Dilworth, traditional Jewish, German and African spiritual music and more. 

Guest appearances by Oxy advanced choral singing groups Cadence and The Accidentals.

TOWNE SIGNERS PRESENT HOLIDAY MUSIC

The Towne Singers present  “Joyful Tidings – The Season’s Best” 2019 holiday concert. This musical celebration includes a blend of beautiful, lively and traditional favorites. The 90-member choir, under the direction of Lance Merrill, accompanied by Ben Mason, and an orchestral ensemble will start the holiday season with The Grinch to stir up some trouble and Santa to welcome the children to the holiday sing-a-long. 

“Joyful Tidings” will be performed at First United Methodist Church on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets for adults are pre-sale $20 and at the door $25; children from 3 to 10 years are $10 presale and $15 at the door.

ZWEET CAFÉ WELCOMES FOUR FINISHING LINE POETS

On Saturday, Dec. 7, Zweet Café, in conjunction with Finishing Line Press presents four Los Angeles area poets whose work is part of the Finishing Line library, an independent press out of Georgetown, Kentucky.

The reading, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will finish around 3:30 p.m.

The four featured writers are Bill Cushing (“A Former Life”), Candice Kelsey (“Still I am Pushing”), Judith Pacht (“A Cumulus Fiction”) and Nancy Shiffrin (“Flight”). Each writer will read selections from his or her collection of work and will be available before and after the reading to meet with those in attendance. Where possible, copies of their work will be available for purchase.

LOS ANGELES SHOW COMING TO CIVIC

The Glendale Historical Society is partnering with Dolphin Promotions to present The Los Angeles Show featuring jewelry, art and antiques benefiting TGHS.

BEYOND LOSS OFFERS HOLIDAY GATHERING OF REMEMBRANCE

The Beyond Loss program in partnership with the Chaplain’s Dept. at Adventist Health Glendale will offer its annual Holiday Gathering of Remembrance, a place to remember those who have died this past year. 

It takes place on Dec. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the main auditorium at the hospital. A light buffet will be served at 5:30 p.m. and a program of music, stories and sharing of names will follow at 6 p.m. There will also be a Wall of Memory for loved ones to post photos of those they have lost.

The holiday season can be a particularly difficult time for those who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one. The annual Holiday Gathering of Remembrance is free and open to anyone in the community who has lost a loved one. The gathering provides an atmosphere of physical and emotional safety, respect, acceptance and, understanding.

Little Landers announces the return of The Randy Van Horne Singers for the 10th year for the Bolton Hall Museum holiday program on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. The program features performances by Franny McCartney from Sunland-Tujunga and the Space Age Pop Music Sound of the Randy Van Horne Singers. Visitors will join in for carol singing and the famous Bolton Hall Museum holiday gift drawing.

LCWC PRESENTS ANNUAL BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

On Saturday, Dec. 14 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the community is invited to the La Crescenta Woman’s Club annual Breakfast with Santa. Prepaid tickets are $15 per person (children under 1 are free). Tickets include breakfast, which is served until 10 a.m., of homemade pancakes, eggs, sausage, pastries and more; entertainment of festive holiday music by the Crescenta Valley High School Charismatics’ a cappella music group; one digital photo with Santa; a special gift for each child; access to the LCWC holiday craft station. A special appearance is planned by local firemen from Station 29 (unless there is an emergency).

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital is now offering senior (65 years and older) dinners every day from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from the hospital’s Hillside Café. Seniors can purchase any meal on the menu for 30% off, and there will be a special “mindful eating” menu selection that has been designed by the hospital’s registered dietitians to ensure that seniors (or anyone in the community) are receiving their necessary nutrition while eating well.

BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A bilingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

WELCOME, SENIORS

Seniors who would like to add a little friendly visiting and lunching with friendly ladies and gentlemen, then play a spirited game of bingo, are invited to the Pioneer Club and the New Beginnings Club.

The Pioneer Club meets the first and third Mondays every month at the fellowship hall – Healy Hall – at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. (parking and hall accessed around the corner on lower Briggs Avenue). The club also offers trips and tours bus trip to Harrah’s Rincon Casino for a day of fun on selected dates plus other outings.

On the second and fourth Mondays of the month, the New Beginnings Club meets at St. James Church fellowship hall, 4625 Dunmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Each club has its own person-
ality and leadership. All are welcome.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and A1C and tools for a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of complications.
