YWCA’S EMPOWHER BRUNCH

The YWCA Glendale invites women from across Los Angeles County to its 3rd annual EmpowHER female leadership event. It will feature Erin Loos Cutraro, CEO of She Should Run, a nonpartisan, national nonprofit organization that helps women define their path to civic leadership.

YWCA Glendale’s EmpowHER will be held at Glendale Central Library Auditorium today, Thursday, Nov. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be a hot brunch buffet, complimentary on-site childcare and the opportunity to network with other women from different sectors. ANNUAL PRAYER BREAKFAST

Today, Nov. 7, the YMCA of the Foothills is having its 29th Annual Prayer Breakfast benefitting the Y’s Chaplain Services Program. Peggy Grande, author of “The President will See You Now” and executive assistant to President Ronald Reagan, will be the keynote speaker.

KIWANIS CLUB PRESENTS INFO ON CAMPBELL CENTER

Speaker David Fields will talk about the Campbell Center at the Friday, Nov. 8 meeting of the Glendale Kiwanis.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

MOVIN’ AROUND IN SOCAL

The speaker at the next Little Landers program is Gordon Glattenberg, a registered professional engineer who has lived his entire life in Southern California. HIs program focuses on Southern California’s now-vanished landmarks and changes in rail and air transportation since the 1950s. A hobby in photography has led to Glattenberg’s extensive travel in all 50 states and 45 countries.

His presentation will be given at Bolton Hall Museum at 1 p.m. on Nov. 9.

BRAIN HEALTH FORUM

A forum on how to protect the brain and information on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle will be presented by USC Verdugo Hills Hospital and the USC Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to

‘GOODBYE GIRL’ COMING TO ALEX THEATRE

Musical Theatre Guild will continue its 24th anniversary season with “The Goodbye Girl,” the musical adaptation of Neil Simon’s film. The one-night-only concert will take place at Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.

Based on Neil Simon’s 1977 award-winning film, “The Goodbye Girl” follows the comic romance between Paula, a bitter single mother and former Broadway dancer who has been jilted one too many times, and Elliot, an opinionated actor who shows up unexpectedly with a lease to sublet her apartment. Musical sparks ensue. Simon’s collaborators for the musical were the legendary Marvin Hamlisch and
David Zippel.

PROGRAM ON ‘LIVING WITH MOUNTAIN LIONS’

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents
“Living with Mountain Lions” presented by Robin Parks on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Parks began volunteering at animal sanctuaries in California and elsewhere in 1999 where he first en-
countered captive mountain lions. This led him to the Mountain Lion Foundation where he has been a volunteer on many Mountain Lion Foundation projects. As a former 25-year career investigator for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, retiring in 2004, he is very involved in reaching out
to law enforcement agencies that are often the first responders to mountain lion incidents.

Residents in the San Gabriel Mountains region live in the range of the mountain lion and learn of encounters and know their range has been made less by encroaching development and freeways. Learning to live together is the lesson.

The program begins following news of conservation and outings. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

SCREENING PLANNED

Gather, Inspire and Act and the Montrose Peace Vigil present “The Biggest Little Farm” on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley
United Methodist Church. The film is a documentary about a couple’s experience transforming a declining farm in Moorpark into a thriving, fertile home of biodiversity.

DUTCH AMERICAN HERITAGE DAY

Each year the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) Southern California chapter hosts the Dutch American Heritage Day fundraising gala in Los Angeles to raise funds for worthy causes. The 26th gala takes place at the California Club in Los Angeles on Saturday, Nov. 16. Cocktail reception is at 5:30 pm., 7 p.m. is the gala opening.

It promises to be an entertaining and enjoyable evening with traditional Dutch appetizers, a delicious meal and the chance to celebrate the long-standing relationship between the Netherlands and the United States. A raffle of two KLM round-trip tickets from LAX to AMS, a week-stay in Aspen, Colorado, plus several other amazing raffle and silent auction items will be available as part of the fundraising efforts.

STUDENT SOLOISTS AT CALTECH

The Caltech Orchestra, directed by Dr. Glenn D. Price, will present its Student Soloist Showcase concerts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17 in Ramo Auditorium. The program will feature five Caltech students in virtuoso solo works with orchestra.

Wesley Yu will perform the Saint-Saëns “Havanaise” for violin, and Sean Byrne will play the “Romanze” for viola and orchestra in the first half of the program. After the intermission there will be three featured piano soloists: Karlming Chen, Forte Shinko and Youngjoon Choi who will each play a movement of the iconic, and much-loved, “Piano Concerto in G major” by Maurice Ravel.

This event will showcase and celebrate the diversity and excellence of talent at Caltech, and will also feature the multi-talented Caltech students who comprise the membership of the orchestra.

FIBROMYALGIA/ARTHRITIS SUPPORT GROUP

The November monthly meeting of the fibromyalgia/arthritis support group is on the third Wednesday (not the fourth Wednesday as usual), Nov. 20, from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.  The meeting is held at La Cañada Presbyterian Church in
the library located next to the sanctuary off the main walkway of the campus. People are welcome who want personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.

The regular meetings for this group are usually the fourth Wednesday of every month. But due to the holidays the dates for the months of November and December are changed. The time and place will remain the same. The December meeting will be on Dec. 11.

BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A bi-lingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

The Pioneer Club meets the first and third Mondays every month at the fellowship hall – Healy Hall – at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. (parking and hall accessed around the corner on lower Briggs Avenue). The club also offers trips and tours bus trip to Harrah’s Rincon Casino for a day of fun on selected dates plus other outings.

On the second and fourth Mondays of the month, the New Beginnings Club meets at St. James Church fellowship hall, 4625 Dunmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
