GLENDALE KIWANIS 

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Feb. 28 the club welcomes the lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis. 

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $25. All are welcome. 

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

The Foothills Community Scholarship Foundation (FCSF) has opened nominations for the 2025 Distinguished Person Award (DPA). This annual honor celebrates individuals or couples who have made a meaningful and lasting impact on local schools and the student community.

All honorees will be celebrated during a joint scholarship and Distinguished Person Award event on April 27 at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge.

HUGE COURTYARD SALE AT THE THURSDAY CLUB 

The La Cañada Thursday Club will be hosting a sale in its courtyard on Saturday, March 1 from 8 p.m. to 2 p.m. 

Sale items include antiques, art, china, collectibles, crystal, electronics, furniture, garden and outdoor items, holiday décor, housewares, jewelry, linens, pet items, sporting goods, toys and vintage items. Everything is priced to sell!  

The historic Thursday Clubhouse is located at 4440 Woodleigh Lane. Admission to the sale is free and there is plenty of parking. The Thursday Club is a social, cultural and philanthropic organization that also supports a scholarship and debutante program.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED 

After a nearly six-year hiatus, The Glendale Historical Society’s popular home tour is back. This year’s “Treasured Tudors” home tour will be held on Sunday, May 4, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  Volunteers are needed to serve as docents or help with check-in and other duties. Full-day or half-day shifts are available but full day is preferred. Lunch and snacks will be provided for full-day volunteers. Scripts and notes will be provided in advance and docent training will take place the day before the home tour.

FREE CONCERT AT LANTERMAN HOUSE

Song of the Angels Flute Orchestra will perform on Sunday, March at 2:30 p.m. at the Lanterman House in La Cañada. It will perform its winter concert in the historic ballroom of the Lanterman House. The renowned orchestra features Micael Armstrong conducting flutes of all sizes with a guest appearance by David Shostac, former first flutist of the LA Chamber Orchestra. 

Free admission, although a donation of $5 to the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation is gratefully received. No reservations required. Please note that the ballroom is only accessible via stairs. 

DANCING AS EXERCISE

Dancing As Exercise is a free ongoing weekly event sponsored by the Los Angeles County Park program for seniors (50 plus) as a form of staying healthy.

There is live music every Friday (note new day) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Park’s building at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta. Light refreshments and water are provided along with socialization and information about other park activities.

Dancing, per se, is not required; single persons are welcome.

JEWEL CITY KNITTERS MONTHLY MEETING

Jewel City Knitters will hold its monthly JCK Charity Knit and Crochet gathering on Saturday, March 8 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Chevy Chase Library, 3301 E. Chevy Chase Dr. in Glendale, (818) 548-2046.

CCLCF EVENTS

The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge hosts a variety of events for the community. Among them are:

• The 31st Annual Western Round Up on March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are now on sale. The event includes face painting, petting zoo, train rides, carnival games and more.
• The Romeo (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club is on the third Wednesday of each month. Meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CCLCF. The next meeting is March 19.
• Bingo & Brunch is on Fridays from Feb. 21 through March 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center. $5 registration fee. This event is geared for this 50 years and older.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL STAMP COLLECTING MONTH 

Community members are invited to join the Glendale/La Crescenta Stamp Club, a community of stamp enthusiasts that meets regularly to share their passion for this timeless hobby.

The Glendale/La Crescenta Stamp Club meets every third Tuesday at the LA County Library – La Crescenta located at the corner of La Crescenta Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, 2809 Foothill Blvd., at 7 p.m. in the second floor community room.

THE DRAGON IN THE VALLEY

When the construction of the 210 Freeway threatened destruction of established La Cañada neighborhoods and many homes, the people of the community battled to keep the project at bay, even taking their fight all the way to Washington, D.C. The Bolton Hall speaker on March 8 at 1 p.m. will be Lanterman House archivist Julie Yamashita who will tell the dramatic story of the building of the road through La Cañada using images and materials from the Lanterman House archives.

Yamashita holds an MLIS in archival studies and an MA in art history/museum studies as well as memberships in several national and local archival societies.

SMART-A-THON FUN PLANNED

The community is invited to put on their thinking caps and join Mary Pinola and the board of the Mary Pinola/CV Chamber Education Fund on Friday, March 14 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital council room.

Plenty of fun for this trivia contest! Proceeds will support the Education Fund which, to date, has given out over $410,000 to education programs throughout the Crescenta-Cañada Valley.

LECTURE ON FOREST LAWN CHURCHES

On Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. The Glendale Historical Society will host a lecture by Dr. James Fishburne, museum director at Forest Lawn, on the historic architecture of Forest Lawn churches: The Little Church of the Flowers, Wee Kirk O’ the Heather and Church of the Recessional. The lecture will be given in The Little Church of the Flowers, Forest Lawn – Glendale.

Discover the history behind the original structures in the British Isles as well as the recreations in Glendale. 

Then on Sunday, March 23 at 1 p.m. a tour will be given of the inside the churches. Tickets are necessary for this exclusive tour of the three Forest Lawn churches – not open to the public – and experience their architectural history at this two-part event. Following the driving tour of the three churches is a wine reception with light refreshments. ‘DAPHNE’ COMING TO LA CANADA

The Independent Opera Company (IOC) continues its 2024-25 season with “Daphne,” a rarely- performed opera by German composer Richard Strauss. The opera will be fully staged with professional costumes, piano accompaniment, and performed by some of Los Angeles’ finest singers. Theresa Patten-Koeckert is a stage director and Galina Barskaya is artistic/music director. 

The opera will be performed in German with English supertitles at the historic La Cañada Congregational Church, 1200 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge on March 21 and March 22 at 7:30 p.m.

LA CAÑADA THURSDAY CLUB HOSTS INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON MODERN DEBUTANTE PROGRAM

Mothers (or fathers) of current high school sophomore girls are invited to attend an informational meeting on Monday, March 26 at 6 p.m. about the Thursday Club’s Modern Debutante Program. OAKMONT LEAGUE HOSTING BENEFIT

On Saturday, March 29 The Oakmont League of Glendale will hold a benefit to raise funds in support of its scholarship program and to support its giving to the YWCA domestic violence program.

“A Swanky Speakeasy” will be held at the Oakmont County Club, 3100 Country Club Drive in Glendale. The evening will feature a bourbon tasting, signature 1920s cocktails, bingo with prizes, a live auction and a Raise The Paddle for the YWCA, as well as a sumptuous dinner. Dressing in 1920s attire will add a touch of fun and flair to the evening.

There will be a short presentation by the YWCA’s new director about how local help is making an impact for women and their families in the domestic violence program.

FRITZ COLEMAN’S SHOW EXTENDS AT THE EL PORTAL 

“Unassisted Residency,” the live comedy performance by TV personality Fritz Coleman that features special guests, has been extended at the El Portal Theatre in the Monroe Forum, 5269 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood.

ANGEL GALA PRESENTED BY CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY

Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley (Cancer Support Community) announced its 35th annual Angel Gala on Saturday, April 26 at The Langham Hotel Pasadena. This year’s gala theme “Rise Together” is a celebration of unity and collective strength.

According to Patricia Ostiller, chief executive officer, Cancer Support Community, the organization will donate up to $100,000 of the funds raised at the gala to Pasadena Community Foundation’s (PCF) Eaton Fire Relief & Recovery Fund (Eaton Fire Fund).

Proceeds from the Angel Gala will directly support Cancer Support Community’s free programs, which include support groups, educational workshops, healthy lifestyle classes and one-on-one counseling designed to improve the quality of life for families affected by cancer. ACTIVITIES AT SUNLAND SENIOR CENTER

The Sunland Senior Center offers a selection of classes and activities daily. Whether seniors are looking to exercise or dance or are interested in art, theater, or knitting, the Center has something for everyone. Sunland also hosts bingo on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and a movie matinee on the big screen at 1 p.m. on Thursdays; on Mondays and Fridays there is country line dancing from noon-1:30 p.m. The Sunland Senior Center runs programming from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a donations-based lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
