Flood Control Maintenance at Dunsmuir

By Mary O’KEEFE

Trucks have been driving up and around New York and Pennsylvania avenues making their way to the Dunsmuir Sediment Placement Site since August. Sometimes there are many trucks, and sometimes only a few, but the fact is residents will be seeing them for several more weeks.

The trucks are hauling sediment from the debris basins in the North San Fernando Valley. Los Angeles County Public Works is conducting the clean-out operations to “safeguard lives and property during this period of increased mudflow risk for local burn areas,” according to a Pubic Works statement.

The operations began in mid-August and work is expected to be completed in about three months, mid-November. However, according to Public Works, there may be additional maintenance and clean-out activities  depending upon future storms through the end of the current storm season, April 2020.

Crews are scheduled to work weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays as needed during storm season.

The truck route, according to Public Works, is as follows: East on La Tuna Canyon Road, north on Tujunga Canyon Boulevard, east on Foothill Boulevard, north on Boston Avenue and east on Markridge Road to Dunsmuir Sediment Placement Site. Then travel down to Markridge Road turning west, then south on Boston Avenue, west on Santa Carlotta Street, south on Lowell Avenue, east on Foothill Boulevard, south on Pennsylvania Avenue and westbound on Foothill (210) freeway. This path is taken throughout the day.

Public Works monitors the trucks making sure they follow scheduled routes.

If residents see trucks that are not observing traffic laws or if there are any questions concerning the project they are asked to contact Public Works 24-hour dispatch center at (800) 675-4357, or contact the project manager Johnathan King at JKing@dpw.lacounty.gov or  call (818) 896-0594 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
