»Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce “Our Business is Your Business”

Thank You, Steve Pierce

It was the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. I was having breakfast at the American Legion with the local veterans of La Crescenta. I just finished volunteering on the clean-up committee for the La Crescenta off-ramp. Headed up by Steve Pierce and held on the second Saturday of every month, Steve has been volunteering his time for the last nine years. I have always thought about participating in this event, but this was the first time. The reason – well, I love my community and like to keep it clean. Pretty simple. In just 45 minutes, three of us – myself, Steve Pierce, and Larry Kanowsky – picked up trash alongside the freeway off-ramp and along the gutter of Altura Avenue that runs parallel to the off-ramp and also had quite a bit of trash. A really easy job though considering the rewarding feeling I felt in return. It doesn’t require much time or effort, either. I’m in. It’s good exercise, too! What a great way to burn calories and help my community by keeping it beautiful! After the event we ate breakfast with some of the local folks at the American Legion. What a great way to begin a Saturday morning.

Steve, as I mentioned previously, has been heading up this event for the past nine years now. So it really is no surprise that he is looking for a replacement. It’s really about time. So I am writing this article not only to tell the community what a rewarding experience it has been for me to participate, but also to assist in getting the word out about the need for a replacement. The event is held once a month, on the second Saturday. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Steve, who heads up the event, arrives at 8 a.m. in the 2700 block of Altura Avenue with all the necessary equipment, such as trash bags, hard hats, safety vests and grabbers. The grabbers make it a cinch to pick up trash. About 45 minutes later, we’re done!

Let this article serve as a call-out to all the members of this community to step up and volunteer or pass on this information to someone who may be an ideal candidate to head up this commitment. I’m thinking that the ideal person for this position might be one who is involved in the real estate business in our local community. The reason? Well, cleaning up helps a community maintain its beauty, which, in turn, helps our real estate market maintain its value. So I am asking the local residents and business owners who reside in this lovely area to come out and join us and/or volunteer to fill Steve Pierce’s shoes and take over his position.
