Enjoy guilt free desserts at Doris’ Slender Sweet Shoppe

There’s some-thing about walking into the Slender Sweet Shoppe that makes me feel like I’m on the boardwalk, at the ocean, back East. It reminds me of the candy shops there with their fresh smells and bright, happy interiors. The big difference being at the Slender Sweet Shoppe is you don’t need to worry too much about calories. All of the desserts here are non-fat and prepared without sugar. Did you know SSS has its own brand of ice cream and it’s only 10 calories an ounce? It comes swirling out of their machine and is served in a cup or a cone. For $4.95 you can get your cone dipped, the old fashioned way, in their special hard shell dipping chocolate. Then there’s the famous “Sinless Sundae” with your choice of ice cream flavors, hot fudge, brownie crumbs, whipped cream, and a cherry. All sugar free for $5.45. I love the display case in the Slender Sweet Shoppe. It is filled with an assortment of pastel colors and various special desserts all neatly packaged and lined up ready for you to take your pick. Many feature their special mousse made right there. While I was visiting recently I got to sample the vanilla mousse from a fresh batch right out of the kitchen. It was like a light, sweet cloud. The mousse comes in many flavors like cappuccino, mint, butterscotch, Bailey’s, chocolate chip and more. One of the most popular desserts at the shop is the “Chocolate Chip Fantasy.” It’s prepared with SSS original flourless sponge cake, layered with chocolate chip mousse, and drizzled with sugar free dipping chocolate. The “Delight” is a favorite of chocolate lovers and is a large brownie layered with chocolate and vanilla mousse. The delightful thing being it tastes great and is only 150 calories. The Slender Sweet Shoppe has been in business for 31 years, the last nine being in The Montrose Shopping Park. Like many of the stores in Montrose, it is a “one of a kind” store that you won’t find anywhere else. SSS (2200 Honolulu Ave.) is owned by Doris Warthen and her daughter Jennifer and is the semi circular façade that welcomes you as you enter the park on the Rocky Cola end. They are open every day, Monday – Thursday 11-8, Friday & Saturday ‘til 8:30, and Sunday 12-6. Do consider treating yourself to a “Slender Sweet” on your way to the First Annual Montrose Film Festival Aug.  27 & 28, under the stars, next to Andersen’s Pets. There will be two nights of free movies and entertainment. You can read all about it at www.shopmontrose.com and on Facebook, by becoming a fan of the Montrose Shopping Park. Thank you for Shopping Montrose!
