Kiwanis AM hosted its summer party on Saturday evening, July 27 at the home of Martha and Tom Burns. Festivities included live and silent auctions.
This is one of two major fundraising events sponsored each year and this year’s event was deemed highly successful by members. Over $3,000 was raised that will be directed toward philanthropic purposes within the community and globally. Donations from many generous restaurants and businesses in the area were given in the form of gift certificates.
The club is also planning for the Labor Day return of member Bob Burleson who undertook the Kiwanis Unity Ride to Eliminate – KURE – 2013. This motorcycle tour was launched by the Kiwanis AM Club on Memorial Day. During Burleson’s time on the road, he is visiting a Kiwanis Club meeting in each of the 48 contiguous states. According to their website, on Aug. 9, KURE set a new Guinness world record as the “longest motorcycle ride in a single country” when Burleson’s mileage hit 11,373.
Burleson is expected to make his return between 10 a.m. and noon at La Cañada Memorial Park. He raised money and awareness of the Eliminate Project of Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus in the world’s underdeveloped countries. This deadly disease kills nearly 60,000 babies and a significant number of women each year. Opportunity tickets (cash only) for $50 can be purchased at the event.
Dignitaries and members of the La Cañada Royal Court will be present to draw the winning ticket for a $10,000 BMW motorcycle or cash equivalent.
