There’s a new train conductor in town. Volunteer Vic Pallos is beginning his first month as an “official” conductor at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. Long fascinated in trains – big or little – Pallos said, “I’m a big kid who loves trains.”

After his wife Barbara died in 2010, Pallos has spent the majority of his time volunteering  for community organizations.  At Descanso, Pallos is scheduled for four to six shifts per month. Each train ride is eight minutes long. From the train platform, Pallos announces train rules before the train is ready to roll.

From his seat in the caboose, Vic Pallos takes a photo of his passengers as the train wends its way through Descanso Gardens.

“Keep fingers and toes inside the train, no rocking or swaying,” Pallos reminds. “All aboard!” announces Pallos and his engineer. Then two quick whistles from Pallos and the journey begins.

Model trains compete with the ride-on trains at Descanso Gardens. The models were introduced last year.

The ride-on trains have been running at Descanso since 1996. At first, they were gas-powered. Today they are electric. Last year, small model trains were introduced. But kids find the ride-along trains “like magic.”

“They are among the favorite activities for Descanso visitors,” said Pallos.

Descanso Gardens announces itself with a flourish. Descanso’s Volunteer Dept. is always on the lookout for volunteers.

From his conductor seat in the caboose, Pallos enjoys the waving of onlookers as the train goes by.

At the end of the ride Pallos announces, “Returning to the station, remain seated until the train comes to a complete stop. Please don’t pick the flowers.”

From the train, Pallos’ passengers can enjoy many views of Descanso Gardens.
