Jestena Marie Galvan, a psychology major at San Diego State University, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. She is a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School, Class of 2017.

Marianne Gatto-Mccann and Jonathan Malmrose of La Crescenta, Nicole Acemian of Glendale, and Christian Ardon of Tujunga were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Ardon was initiated at California State University, Los Angeles; Gatto-Mccann at San Jose State University; Acemian at California State University, Los Angeles. Malmrose is pursuing a degree in business management at Brigham Young University.

Approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni are initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Wheaton College student Erika Johnson of Glendale earned Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Midwest Region recognition from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The team recently won the 2018 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Outdoor Track and Field Championship. This is the team’s second consecutive CCIW championship.

The foursome of Hannah Roeske, Marissa Heath, Brianna Hawthorne and Erika Johnson set a school record in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:46.57 that was second fastest in the Midwest region this season.

Johnson was also named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Midwest Region Women’s Team. To be named All-Region, an athlete must either be ranked in the top-five of an individual event in the region according to final TFRRS data or be part of a top-three relay team.

Wheaton College sponsors 21 varsity sports, and Thunder teams compete at the NCAA Division III level. The Thunder Athletics program has won five NCAA Division III Championships since 1984, and Wheaton student-athletes have won 31 Division III individual National Championships all-time. The following students have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester at Washington University in St. Louis.

Sarah Binns of Glendale, enrolled in the university’s College of Arts & Sciencesl; Matthew Padgett La Cañada, enrolled in the university’s Olin Business School; William Choi of La Cañada Flintridge, enrolled in the university’s College of Arts & Sciences.

To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.

Washington University in St. Louis is counted among the world’s leaders in teaching, research, patient care and service to society.

The university draws students to St. Louis from about 90 countries and all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The total student body is more than 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

Marco Bellutta of La Crescenta, majoring in mechanical engineering, and Jon Hennon of La Cañada Flintridge, majoring in geomatics-option in surveying, were named to the 2017-18 winter term dean’s list at Oregon Institute of Technology. Inclusion on the list requires a 3.30 to 3.69 grade-point average.

Only full-time undergraduate students (12 credit hours or more at Oregon Tech) are eligible for academic honors.

Sami I. Daher of Glendale, a senior studying psychology, Lucy Newcombe of La Cañada, a junior studying human development and family science, Gessa Coffey of La Cañada Flintridge, a sophomore studying nutrition, and Jessica A. Davidson of La Cañada Flintridge, a senior studying human development and family science, earned spots on the scholastic honor roll winter term at Oregon State University.

A total of 1,398 students earned straight-A (4.0). Another 4,609 earned a B-plus (3.5) or better to make the listing. To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work.

Cadets joining the Army upon graduation at The Citadel took their commissioning oath on Friday, May 4 in McAlister Field House. The cadets were officially sworn in as officers during the South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 5.

Alexander Alequin of La Cañada is one of more than 100 Army officers commissioned in The Citadel Class of 2018. Alequin received a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice.

Ryann Cerrina of La Cañada qualified for the spring 2018 dean’s list at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

Approximately 30% of Belmont’s 8,080 students qualified for the spring 2018 dean’s list.

Gavin Traber, senior molecular and cellular biology major from La Crescenta, is among more than 1,200 Harding University students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the spring 2018 semester.

The dean’s list is published each semester by Dr. Marty Spears, University provost, honoring those who have achieved high scholarship. To be eligible, a student must be carrying 12 or more hours with a 3.65 or higher grade-point average and no incompletes.

Harding University is a private Christian university located in Searcy, Arkansas. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, it is the largest private university in the state.

James Murphy of La Cañada, a sophomore secondary education/social studies major at York College of Pennsylvania, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must be registered for at least 12 academic credit hours and earn a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher.

A private college located in southcentral Pennsylvania, York College offers more than 50 baccalaureate majors in professional programs, the sciences and humanities to its 4,600 undergraduate students.

Anisa Ricci of La Crescenta recently graduated as an outstanding scholar in the Davidson Honors College from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Arts in women’s, gender and sexuality studies.

The Davidson Honors College at the University of Montana recognized nearly 100 graduating students with its University Scholar Distinction, one of the highest academic honors available. More than 25% of these graduates were named “most outstanding senior” in their major.

Stephanie Beck, Class of 2018, from La Cañada Flintridge was named to the dean’s list at Bucknell University during the spring semester of the 2017-18 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.

Located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Bucknell University is a highly selective private liberal arts university that offers majors in the arts, engineering, humanities, management, and social and natural sciences, along with broad opportunities outside of class, to its 3,600 undergraduates.

Elizabeth Crotty from Glendale was recently named to the dean’s list at William & Mary for the spring 2018 semester.

In order to achieve dean’s list status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 quality point average during the semester.

William & Mary is the second oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

Sabrina Whitford of La Cañada Flintridge received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from Marist College the weekend of May 18.

Alec Richardson of La Cañada Flintridge was recently named to the Emmanuel College dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester. To earn a spot on the dean’s list, Emmanuel students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for a 16-credit semester

La Cañada native Ryan Witherspoon participated in commencement proceedings at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington on Sunday, May 20. A graduate of La Cañada High School, Witherspoon received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Whitman.
