CalRTA Provides for Students’ Needs

California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), Foothill Division 11 represents retired teachers of the unified school districts of La Cañada, Glendale and Burbank. The association provides $4,000 scholarships to future teachers at California State University Northridge to inspire them to complete their credential and continue their pursuit of higher education. CalRTA, Foothill Division 11 offers schools within the three districts a chance to request a number of supply-filled backpacks needed by students who cannot provide them for themselves. The Foothill Division encourages classroom teachers in the three districts to apply for a teacher grant that provides up to $2,000 to provide their students with enrichment experiences within their classrooms.

In the 2023-24 school year, CalRTA, Foothill Division 11 provided 16 classroom grants, a total of more than $16,000, to revitalize a community garden, provide materials to learn STEM or STEAM concepts and revitalize an aging classroom library, among other needed projects.

In 2024-25, CalRTA, Foothill Division 11 awarded $15,000 to 10 inspired teachers to begin a library on financial literacy for a newly-mandated senior class that can be used by the entire high school, provided a 3D printer for better understanding of technology fostering creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking, funded the purchase of pickle ball equipment for P.E. classes and provided needed storage for an enlarged classroom to better function. Among the recipients were Antonia Piscitelli-Carrasco from Daily High School who received a grant to fund Second Chance to Grow garden and Monika Batra from Clark Magnet High School who was provided with materials to study “Sound” and teach physics according to Next Generation Science Standards.

Since funds for special classroom projects is limited CalRTA, Division 11 is proud to help meet the needs of students in local schools.
