On Saturday, Montrose Shopping Park played host to folks enjoying an assortment of wines, hors d’oeuvres and community interaction at the annual Spring Wine Walk. Across the shopping park, 29 shops and restaurants opened their doors from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to welcome guests to sample wines and make new friends.

One of those merchants was April Ray Salon, located in the Boardwalk shopping center, and it was her first time participating in the Wine Walk.

: Stuart Byles was at Once Upon A Time Bookstore pouring wine grown at the Le Mesnager Stone Barn in Deukmejian Wilderness Park.

“I haven’t taken part in a community event in a while,” Ray said. “I used to do a lot in my first year of business and I felt like it was just time to do something to be part of the community. [I wanted to] remind people that this little building is here, and this little building has a lot of other businesses to offer as well. [I] also want to promote the other businesses in Montrose.”

Aladdin Rugs had a line of guests who didn’t want to leave.

The Boardwalk is on Thompson Court, the little street that runs north from Honolulu Avenue between Star Café and Black Cow Café, and parallels the parking lot. The Boardwalk is the little complex of dark wooden buildings with a deep orange trim situated in the parking lot behind Revolution Dance Center. With a location off the beaten path, it was a gamble to get foot traffic up from Honolulu but the shop was full – thanks to the placement on the event map and MSPA management team member Steve Pierce, who ushered guests up to the hidden gem. This spirit of cooperation, Ray said, is what events like these are all about.

“I like the idea of getting people to come all the way over to this side of the Wine Walk when so many more of the businesses are on the next block over. I feel like when we all work together to promote each other that’s the best,” Ray said. “I know that there are a lot of hair salons in Montrose and we can all work together. There are barbershops and hair salons that offer services that I don’t and so I’m here to just be part of the community and help everyone out and bring business to Montrose.”

The event was considered a success by organizers and the next Wine Walk is planned around the holiday season.
