It wasn’t just hoof beats that attendees of the annual Day at the Races heard on Sunday afternoon, but also thunder. Near record rainfall deterred some from attending the third annual fundraiser held at Santa Anita Racetrack, but about 100 souls braved the wet weather to place their bets and show support for the CV Chamber of Commerce and CV Sheriff’s Support Group.

Those who did travel to Pasadena were treated to delicious barbecue provided by Schreiner’s Fine Sausages and beverages donated by Len Pieroni. Also available were bountiful raffle baskets that were part of a silent auction.

And of course there were the ponies. Plenty of horsepower could be found pounding the turf, albeit a soggy one.

Organizer Rick Dinger said that about $2,000 was raised for the two groups and he is already looking forward to next year’s event.

“I appreciate the people who made it out for the day,” he said, “and I especially want to thank Schreiner’s and Len.”

Whether one came to cheer on their preferred pick or just to engage in a good time, all left Santa Anita in good – though maybe damp – spirits.
