LCIF Offers Holiday Respite

The spirit of community and gratitude is taking center stage as Lutheran Church in the Foothills (LCIF) and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church team up to host a special Thanksgiving Eve Service and Pie Social. The community is invited to attend the event, which offers a peaceful moment of reflection before the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving Day.

For many, the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving is a rare window of calm before holiday travel, cooking and family events consume the following day. The service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 3561 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta. All are welcome to attend this evening of worship and social connection, regardless of church affiliation.

In other news from LCIF, local bookworms are invited to attend the church’s next book club meeting on Monday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. in the church’s conference room. Book lovers will discuss “Where They Last Saw Her” by Marcie Rendon, a critically acclaimed mystery novel. The selection for December is “The Max Lucado Christmas Collection” by Max Lucado. The LCIF book club meets monthly and is open to anyone with a love of reading.

Visit lcifoothills.org for event details, including small group gatherings and opportunities to serve. For more information or to request/offer help, email office@lcifoothills.org or call (818) 790-1951. The church is located at 1700 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Movie Night at UUCVH

On Friday night, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m., the community is invited to join the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills (UUCVH) for movie night. The feature film is yet to be revealed to the public. Will it be a mystery, a comedy or an action-packed blockbuster? Appease your curiosity; come for the mystery, stay for the fellowship! No reservations needed, just stop by.

Then on Sunday, Nov. 23, UUCVH will celebrate Friendsgiving in its Friendship Hall. Instead of the usual 10:30 a.m. service, there will be time to share food, conversation and camaraderie at 11 a.m. There will be elements of worship: lighting the chalice, singing and sharing joys and concerns. Those who would like to take part can bring an appetite and a dish to share. A sign-up sheet will be distributed at church or email Anne Moratto at bigvillagepr@gmail.com to let the church know what will be brought.

Walk and Word

Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Nov. 23 & 30. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.

Those with questions can email Jeanne at jnlavieri@earthlink.net.

All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
