Spiritually Speaking

Question: So many people have been laid off from their jobs or have been affected by the U.S. government shutdown that their financial burden is increasing. What do you do to maintain your spiritual balance and keep hope alive? Shutdown Blues

Dear Shutdown Blues,

During these very hard economic times I find it even more helpful to maintain my spiritual balance. I continue to pray for others daily, spend an hour each morning at dawn practicing mindfulness and noting what I am grateful for in my life. I spend time with my dogs and get myself outdoors a little bit each day. It’s so easy to be stifled and depression can cause us to withdraw and take refuge in our home with no energy.

I remember that everything is a gift from God. I have been through rough times before and I remember that with hope comes a source of energy and positivity that helps me to move forward and not let the rough times define me or prevent me from finding joy in the life the creator had given me. If I can help others then I know my living is not in vain. An old gospel song that also reminds me that helping others is often a remedy to the blues.

Stay positive and know that joy comes in the morning.
