Kay Ellen Brown

Feb. 14, 1943 – Aug. 3, 2025

Kay Ellen Brown, 82, of San Marcos, California, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 3. Born on Valentine’s Day in 1943 in Lakewood, Ohio, Kay embodied the true meaning of love, warmth and generosity to everyone she met.

Known affectionately as “Ms. Kay” and “Mama Kay,” she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her unwavering kindness, wonderful silliness and love for others left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

In the early 1970s, Kay followed her passion for early childhood education and, alongside her sister and brother-in-law, co-founded Montrose Preschool. With a vision of creating a nurturing and inspiring environment for young children, she devoted herself to building a space where learning and love could thrive hand-in-hand. Under Kay’s leadership,  for over 30 years Montrose Preschool flourished. Generations of children experienced her care, and many former students in their earliest memories fondly recall Ms. Kay as a joyful and comforting presence.

Kay’s legacy is one of inclusion, warmth and laughter. She welcomed others with open arms and an open heart into her life, offering joy even during challenging times. Her ability to bring smiles and laughter to those around her made her not only admired but deeply loved.

Kay is survived by her daughters Nora and Dena; seven grandchildren: Jacob, Brent, Raven, Ben, Michaela, Jack and Lucy; great-granddaughter Carol; sister Carol; brother Richard; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Her light will be deeply missed but her spirit will continue to shine through the countless lives she touched … and the memories held.
