Lazara Tio passed away peacefully on May 30 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba on Oct. 27, 1933 she was the youngest of nine children born to Manuel Cárdenas and Altagracia Alemán. Lazara’s vibrant spirit and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

After immigrating to the United States, Lazara dedicated her life to her family. She was a devoted wife to Federico G. Tio, sharing a lifetime of love and companionship. She was a cherished mother to Federico F. Tio (Andrea), Rodolfo Tio (Eleni), and Leticia Kalpakoff (Steve). Her love extended to her beloved grandchildren, Nicolas and Tatiana Tio, Mary and Lazaro Tio, and Sasha Kalpakoff, who brought immense joy to her life.

Lazara had a deep affection for animals and provided a loving home to many pets throughout her life. From dogs and cats to turtles, birds, fish and even a squirrel, she embraced them all with open arms. Her compassion and nurturing spirit extended beyond her human family to all creatures great and small.

Lazara was truly one-of-a-kind, a force of nature whose presence filled any room. Her independent spirit and candor will be remembered fondly by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A wake was held on Friday, June 20 at Crippen Mortuary at 2900 Honolulu Ave in La Crescenta. The funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 21 at Cristo Rey Church, located at 4343 Perlita Ave. in Los Angeles. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Glendale, 1712 S. Glendale Ave. in Glendale.
