Sundays of Sound Concert to Feature Rare Masterworks by Beethoven, Ginastera, Mendelssohn and Dvořák

The Sundays of Sound Concert Series, presented by Rhapsodia, continues with an afternoon of chamber music on Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at the historic La Crescenta Presbyterian Church, featuring cellist Raymond Newell and pianist Matthew Krell.

The program includes Beethoven’s “Cello Sonata No. 4, Op. 102 No. 1,” a pivotal work from his late period with its innovative form and emotional depth; Ginastera’s “Pampeana No. 2,” a vibrant rhapsody inspired by Argentine gaucho culture; Mendelssohn’s “Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 58,” blending prodigious elegance with virtuosic energy; and Dvořák’s “Silent Woods,’ a serene evocation of Bohemian landscapes. 

Raymond Newell, an active chamber musician and principal cellist with ensembles like the Bob Cole Symphony Orchestra, brings a wealth of experience from international tours and collaborations with artists from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other well-known ensembles. 

Matthew Krell, an award-winning pianist and composer, is celebrated for his virtuosic technique and versatility across classical, jazz and contemporary genres, with accolades including first place at the PianoHouse International Competition with a Carnegie Hall performance and first at the California Music Teacher’s National Association Young Artist’s Competition. 

Admission is by donation.
