The popular, free, family-friendly Burbank Fire & Police Service Day had something for everyone. Held at the Burbank headquarters on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., there were station tours, vehicle and equipment displays, live demonstrations, such as “bystander CPR” in which community members provide CPR, according to Jessica Strange, Pre-hospital Care coordinator at St. Joseph Hospital.

“Hands-only CPR increases the number of community members providing ‘sidewalk CPR,’ thereby increasing survivors,” said Strange.  

At Service Day, the kids enjoyed jumping in with chest compressions on the three CPR dolls provided.   

According to Burbank Fire Battalion Chief Erik Jueden, visitors to the annual Service Day increase every year. He said especially popular this year was barbecue fare served by members of Firefighters Local 778. Union members grilled the meat the day before to more quickly accommodate hungry customers.    

Burbank resident Drew Spracher and son Luke, 3,  posing with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, said, “We wait all year to come to Service Day.”
