La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild (LCFOG) found a new home to conduct its monthly meetings. Thanks to the generosity of the La Cañada Lutheran Church, LCFOG now meets in the church’s fellowship hall. LCFOG meets once a month to discuss what projects members will undertake to support Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC), which provides medical care to children whether or not they are insured or are under-insured.
The LCFOG began when a group of women from First Congregational Church Emanuel Class began to assist Dr. Charles LeRoy Lowman at the USC Graves Memorial Clinic in his clinic for crippled children. The need for this care was growing and Dr. Lowman needed more space. The women followed him from one site to another. Eventually members converted stable stalls into clinic rooms for treatment and for plaster work. By 1926, the number of patients began to strain the available facilities. That’s where fundraising went into full gear.
Fast forward to 1956: auxiliaries were formed in outlying communities. One was La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild. Through the years the Guild contributed to a new clinic building, diagnostic and treatment centers, a surgery center and state-of-the-art diagnostic machines and much more. At an upcoming luncheon the Guild will enjoy recognition for their part in raising money to support Luskin OIC.
Members of LCFOG and guests took time for tea on April 13 at the T Room in Montrose. This was coordinated by Ways and Means Chair Dee Dee Nuanes.
Then it was back to work. Members will soon be starting to make blankets to be given to children at the annual Christmas party where Santa will be giving out books and toys at Luskin OIC in downtown LA. Members also donate school supplies for children this month.
LCFOG is an ongoing commitment and is always eager to admit new members. Anyone interested in putting a smile on a child’s face are invited to join LCFOG. For more information contact Jeanne Long at (818) 640-9106.
