The U.S. Mint recently released a twenty-five cent piece that features Juliette Low, the founder, first president and patroness of the Girl Scouts. Over 60 million women in this country have been Girl Scouts and only five women have been chosen for the honor of being featured on U.S. coins.

Locally, Christie Crahan has appeared in over 250 events posing and impersonating Low, informing audiences of the dynamic woman who began the Girl Scouts.

Juliette Low started the Girl Scouts in 1912, a time before women had the vote and financial decisions were made for them by their fathers and husbands – and sometimes even brothers. Girls received less than a sixth grade education. Many low-income girls worked 12 hours a day, six days a week in factories because they had no other skills. There were no child labor laws to protect them.

Another remarkable thing about Juliette Low, or Miss Daisy as the girls called her, is that she was legally deaf.

Christie Crahan as Juliette Low has addressed tens of thousands of girls around the world.

After overseeing the establishment of Girl Scouts in the U.S., she stepped down from the presidency of the organization to go on to build what is now the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides – WAGGGS. She believed that world peace could be attained by bringing women and girls together.

United by the universal Girl Scout Promise and Law, today WAGGGS has 151 member countries and is the largest organization in the world for women and girls, and has representation for female issues at the United Nations.

Crahan has portrayed Juliette Low in 37 states and at Juliette Low seminars in Europe and at the national GS Convention. During COVID she made 180 online sessions for troops across the country accepting no pay but using the opportunity to raise a little money for the Juliette Low birthplace in Savannah, Georgia, and Nuestra Cabana, located in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Nuestra Cabana is one of the five world centers for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Crahan has been recognized with the Girl Scouts highest award, the Thanks Badge, and has been presented with the Appreciation Badge – both national recognitions. She has also received the Evergreen Award from the City of La Cañada.
