Sen. Portantino, LA Mission College Host Open House

State Senator Anthony J. Portantino, along with Los Angeles Mission College President Dr. Monte E. Perez, of hosting an open house event at the college’s Sunland-Tujunga campus on Friday, Nov. 3. The campus opened this spring. The Senator and Dr. Perez met with community members to discuss course offerings and available services, including ESL classes and UC/CSU transferable courses.

“I believe in providing opportunities for learning and community enrichment wherever possible. I am happy to support LA Mission College’s expansion into Sunland-Tujunga, which addresses a need long expressed in this 25th District community,” said Sen. Portantino.

Sen. Portantino and President Perez also fielded questions about how the Sunland-Tujunga campus can better meet the needs of the community. Students from LA Mission College’s Culinary Arts Institute provided finger foods and desserts. Approximately 50 people attended the open house including a number of current students and school administrators. Enrollment at the new campus for the fall semester is approximately 200 students in 10 classes.

Course offerings for the fall 2017 semester included Child Development 1 (Child Growth & Development), Child Development 2 (Early Childhood: Principles & Practices), Communication Studies 101, English 101 (College Reading & Composition), and Math 227 (Statistics).

Spring 2018 course offerings include Psychology 1 (General Psychology), Geography 2 (Cultural Elements of Geography), and Counseling 004 (Career Planning), as well as a non-credit 16-week ESL class.
