David Ostash of La Crescenta received his EdD (Doctorate in Education) on May 6 at Azusa Pacific University. David graduated from CVHS Class of ‘92. He is currently assistant superintendent of Sierra Sands School District in Ridgecrest.

Katie Moser of Glendale/La Crescenta was selected for the prestigious alumni group the Alcala 100. A reception was held in her honor and featured multiple speakers congratulating these young leaders on their accomplishments over the past four years, and the many more to come.

The Alcala 100 is an alumni group of University of San Diego consisting of outstanding leaders from each graduating class. Every spring, administrators and faculty members from across campus nominate key seniors leaders to be inducted into the Alcala 100. As students, these individuals demonstrated a passion for USD and through their contributions to student life made a major impact on the campus.

Amelia Palacios, the child of Maureen and Jorge Palacios of La Crescenta, graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota on Saturday, May 13. Palacios received a liberal arts degree in Media and Cultural Studies. Palacios is a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School.

In addition, Palacios received the following honors/awards: summa cum laude: media and cultural studies and the Media and Cultural Studies Prize for academic excellence.

Dylan Kilgour, the child of Dean and Deanna Kilgour of La Crescenta, also graduated from Macalester College on Saturday, May 13. Kilgour received a liberal arts degree in economics and mathematics (applied & stats). Kilgour is a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School.

Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg presented diplomas to 518 graduating seniors. The ceremony also featured an academic procession led by the college’s pipe band, flag bearers representing 37 countries of the 63 graduating international seniors plus the U.S. and U.N. flags, faculty in academic robes.

Ottawa University announced Johanna Moran of Tujunga was named to the dean’s honor roll. Honorees must be full-time degree-seeking students who have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours over the preceding two semesters at Ottawa University and earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Founded in 1865, Ottawa University prepares professional and liberal arts graduates for lifetimes of personal significance, vocational fulfillment and service to God and humanity as a Christ-inspired community of grace and opening inquiry.

Rachelle Serrano of Glendale has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina.

Students receiving recognition on the dean’s list at Newberry College had to achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale during the semester. A total of 293 students earned dean’s list honors this semester.

Newberry College is a private, residential, co-educational college with a diverse student population. Founded in 1856 by the Lutheran Church, the College is accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the National Association of Schools of Music.

The following local residents have been named to Emerson College’s dean’s list for the spring 2017 semester. The requirement to make the dean’s list is a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

Majoring in marketing communication Lydia Lou from La Crescenta; majoring in journalism Michelle Lavner from La Cañada; majoring in media arts production Cameron Leewong from La Cañada Flintridge and Emily Mccoy and Barrett Festen from La Crescenta.

Anna M McGregor of La Crescenta, Class of 2018, theater and music, was named to the dean’s list with high honors from Connecticut College.

Amanda Jane Chugg of La Cañada was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in behavioral neuroscience at the 99th commencement ceremony on May 21.

Founded in 1911, Connecticut College is a highly selective private liberal college located on a 750-acre arboretum campus overlooking Long Island Sound and the Thames River.

Oregon State University will hold its 148th commencement on Saturday, June 17 at Reser Stadium on the Corvallis campus.

Army and Navy Academy recognizes those students who have exhibited academic excellence during the fifth grading period of the 2016-17 school year. Those who have achieved a grade point average of 3.80 or higher have been named to the dean’s list and include Dojun Kim of La Crescenta and Ryan McWhorter of La Cañada.

Do Won Kim of La Crescenta has been named to the honor roll for the fifth grading period of the 2016-17 school year.

Founded in 1910, the Army and Navy Academy is a private not-for-profit institution that provides an academically robust, character-based education for young men, grades 7 through 12. It is the only private boarding school in San Diego County and the only private military academy for high school-age students in California and surrounding states.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) began its 149th commencement celebrations with the graduate students’ ceremony on Thursday, May 11, awarding nearly 800 masters and doctoral degrees. Andrew Weiler of Montrose was awarded a Master of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering.

Founded in 1865 in Worcester, Massachusetts, WPI is one of the nation’s first engineering and technology universities. Its 14 academic departments offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering, technology, business, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts, leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Zhaklin Shaumyan of Tujunga earned a Bachelor of Science degree in human services (UG) from Springfield College in Massachusetts for studies completed in 2017.
Springfield College recently held its commencement weekend. At the graduate commencement, 658 master’s degrees, six certificates of advanced graduate study, 15 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 34 Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees, and five Doctor of Psychology degrees were awarded. At the undergraduate commencement, 873 bachelor’s degrees were awarded for a two-day total of 1591 degrees.
Founded in 1885, Springfield College is known worldwide for the guiding principles of its Humanics philosophy-educating students in spirit, mind and body for leadership in service to others.

Local residents were among the approximately 1,000 graduates who received their degrees at the University of Hartford’s Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 21.
Rebecca Kahn of La Cañada, a cinema major in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, received a Bachelor of Arts degree and Kaival Parekh of La Crescenta, a liberal studies student in the University’s Hillyer College, received an Associate in Arts.
The University of Hartford (UHart), centrally located in Connecticut, provides a distinctive educational experience across seven schools and colleges for one of the most diverse student bodies in New England.

Shaun Troy of Tujunga earned a BS in management from Quincy University. Quincy University, located in Quincy, Illinois, hosted its 154th commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m. in Quincy University’s Pepsi Arena. The 2017 graduating class is comprised of 243 undergraduates with an additional 41 receiving graduate degrees.

The following local residents recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.
Tae Hyup Ha of La Crescenta was initiated at University of Southern California abd Tanya Chaljian of Glendale was initiated at California State University, Los Angeles.
These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Lyla Iannaccone, an arts administration from Glendale, has been named to the dean’s list at Butler University in Indianapolis for the spring 2017 semester.
Any degree-seeking undergraduate student earning at least 12 academic hours of grade credit in a given semester may be placed on the dean’s list of the college of enrollment if the semester grade point average is in the top 20% of all eligible students in that college. Courses taken under the pass/fail option do not count toward 12 academic hours of grade credit.

Lehigh University congratulates Dana Budzyn and Caroline Raney of La Cañada and Sidney Ro of Tujunga for being named to the dean’s list in spring 2017. This status is granted to students who earned a scholastic average of 3.6 or better while carrying at least 12 hours of regularly graded courses.
For more than 150 years, Lehigh University (lehigh.edu) has combined outstanding academic and learning opportunities with leadership in fostering innovative research.

Stephanie Beck from La Canada Flintridge, Class of 2018, was named to the dean’s list at Bucknell University during the spring semester of the 2016-17 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.
Brandon Newquist, also from La Cañada Flintridge, graduated from Bucknell University on May 21.
Located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Bucknell University is a highly selective private liberal arts university that offers majors in the arts, engineering, humanities, management, and social and natural sciences, along with broad opportunities outside of class, to its 3,600 undergraduates.

Baylor University conferred degrees on more than 2,500 graduates during spring commencement exercises May 12 and 13 in the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus.
Among the recipients from Glendale were Rachel Conover Arnall who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, university scholar and Brett Vincent Feehan, who earned a Bachelor of Business Admin., management information systems; from La Crescenta, Elena Gabrielle León earned a Bachelor of Science in education, special education all level, magna cum laude.
