Congratulations and Condolences

Well, the hard-fought battles are over for local elections that included seats on the Glendale City Council, Glendale Unified School District board of education and Glendale Community College board of trustees. The City Council will see one new face –Vrej Agajanian – grace the dais; incumbents Ara Najarian and Zareh Sinanyan will retain their seats. While I applaud the victors in this contest, I will wait anxiously – but positively – to see how the choices of the people will benefit the foothill area. As I mentioned in an earlier column, I prefer having a north Glendale representative on the council; however, the five members are sworn to represent the entire city so hopefully the La Crescenta portion of Glendale won’t be forgotten when it comes to the delegation of services and funding.

The battle for all of these seats was indeed tough. On Tuesday night I had the chance to stop by the “viewing parties” (watching as the results started coming in) for local Glendale City Council candidates Rick Dinger and Grant Michals. Both expressed relief that this race was over but who knows? Perhaps we’ll see the names of one or the other (or both) on future ballots.

While I may not have agreed with the tenets of all the candidates, I admire that they all had the gumption to throw their hats into the political fray. It is not a decision made lightly. There are financial and emotional costs to running a campaign and I thank those who gave it a shot.
